complete newbie to jam making, i really want to add them to hampers as well as marmelade ect - im trying to keep costs down but also want them to be tasty obviously. Ill admit i havnt read the whole thread but as usual xmas is fast approaching and im leaving things to late again!
has anyone got a easy fail safe recipies for me? or tips of keeping cost down??
Thankyou xxxxxxxxxx
I'm a newbie to jam/chutney making too - beed stalking this thread so better say hello to everyone!
Here's a couple of recipies I've used for homemade xmas gifts this year;
The first is Winter Chutney that was on Kirsties Homemade Xmas last year - it's edible pretty much straight away so great for a late gift. Don't be put off by the awful smell as you make it - it does taste yummy, promise,

The second is Chilli Jam made by Nigella. Tbh I did this and it's more like sweet and sour sauce than jam, not sure if I didn't heat it long/hot enough or whether it is actually meant to be like this. Haven't tried it yet as I'm not sure whether or not we're keeing a jar.

Next is an alternative Chilli Jam given to me on the forum here - if I was making another batch I think I'd try that rather than the nigella one

I also have a Apple, Date and Ginger chutney recipie that you shoud have time to make before xmas - it was given to me by another MSE as i had a glut of free apples to use up - have one last lot to use for this. If you'd like it - pm me.
Sorry to all the regulars if I've jumped on with a long postI am sure there will be lots of jam making tips that will be offered up .... I'll be making note of them too

MEDLAR PULP and HFW advice:
Onto 2nd batch of medlar jelly - HFW recipe - and he says save the strained pulp to use in chutney. However, this pulp comprises quartered medlars and rough-chopped, unpeeled, uncored Bramleys. Surely all these hips, haws, pips, stalks, calyx spikes, seed cases etc are not the stuff of any base for any chutney. I intend em'g RC, but thought I'd ask here first.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

Would it push through a sieve with the back of a wooden spoon to get the pulp out?
I usually find that it goes through easier when its warm.

They are lakeland jars 8oz, have more jars and more berries in the freezer.
So what are the quantities of berries/sugar needed please to make 3 more jars?0 -
How much did you use to make 6 jars? Halve that amount!0

When i make blackberry jam i use the same weight of sugar as the weight of the blackberries. I also cook the berries from frozen using the frozen weight of the berries0
