Update on Tesco's & Visa Electron

  • Hi All,

New to this, but trolled google to find this forum.
As above, Tesco did not deliver my grocery order this week. There excuse, the Co-op Visa Debit card i use cannot be processed. I got lots of waffle about Electron (It hasnt been an electron card for a few years now) and guess what, its the same card i use constantly with Tesco home shopping.
Somebody in Tesco IT i suspect has flicked a switch, and hundreds if not thousands of online shoppers with Tesco are now left without food. I call them and all i get is, "can i use another card" (err no,, its my only card and theres nothing wrong with it), can you come into the store (where the card will miraculously work) and we can then deliver to you (Kind of defeats the point and i dont drive anyway)
I have another supervisor calling me back today...i have read about Tescos antiquated IT system, this does not suprise me, but customer service is appaling, no body is championing this from Tescos perspective. Fuming is the polite phrase for my thoughts on this debacle...
  • Yes same for me yesterday, no shopping! I was told my card wouldn't go through the system & could I use another card? Er....no, I want to use this card thank you, as this is the card I've been using with you for the past 6 months without problems, and anyway it's the only card I use. Was told the other alternative was to come to the store and pay in person which was totally inconvenient for me & defeats the whole object of a home delivery service. Tesco said it was a problem with my bank & that I'd have to talk to them, so I phoned the Co-Op who confirmed there was money in my account & they weren't blocking my card or anything. I phoned Tesco Customer Services back & was given various explanations by various people through the day including Co-Op had recently been upgrading their debit cards so that the first 4 numbers were the same as those on Electron cards, which is why their computer was rejecting all debit cards, even if they weren't Electron cards. When I said - well actually my card is an Electron card & I've been using it for months - nobody could explain why it suddenly wasn't working. I phoned several times & given a different story every time, all blaming the Co-Op. The most honest answer was from a rather tired sounding lady at Tesco who said "Well actually our computer system is rather old and outdated & we really need to upgrade it." Needless to say, the problem wasn't sorted & I didn't get my shopping, & I finally gave up. I'm off to Asda (hope theyre OK with Electrons..)

Rainbow it is NOT an Electron card it is a Visa DEBIT card.

Went into town to the small Tesco to pick up some bits that they hadn't delivered and their cash machine wouldn't let me get a balance or cash but their tills accepted it.

Guess it's back to Asda for me to, though Sainsburys is coming up cheaper on my shopping list as it stands at the moment for next week on www.mysupermarket.com

I shop in all 3, pick the bargains up at Tesco and Sainsbury's and do the bulk at ASDA.

Unfortunately I don't drive and our Sainsburys is out of town on the other side of town and involves two buses. Asda and Lidl and Aldi are in the next town and the Tesco we have in town is a small one. So I have to weigh up delivery costs with what I need and go with which ever Mysupermarket says is cheaper.

This has made for interesting reading.... it is a relief to know that I am not suddenly going mad...that like me others have found they were happily using their co-op visa debit card then suddenly they can't use it. I am going to use asda from now on, and I am just hoping that the issue regarding funds being on hold as well as being charged has been resolved with co-op for asda groceries.
I am confident that the picture of an electron card with a thick red line through it is a new addition to the tesco payment page....either that or for the past two years I have had my eyes shut whilst paying!
As vikingreaver said above it seems as though someone in Tesco has suddenly flicked a switch stopping co-op visa debit cards being used.

cd36uk I haven't had a problem with the double charging in around a year so although I wouldn't say it is conclusive proof I think it is rarely a problem now with Asda.

And no I hadn't seen the Electron symbol crossed through until my last order, that definately is a new thing.

well, thank goodness I can find a thread on this lovely BR forum, where I can vent my spleen [yup, I still have one!]!!!!!!!!

I have recently had issues with Tesco, especially Tesco Direct, regarding the use of my Co-op [visa] debit card, especially online.

{yes, it isn't an electron...I have often tried to use the card having ticked the electron box, on other sites... to have it refused, so it MUST be a visa debit !!!]...

I, today, converted a large number of my accrued Tesco clubcard points into online vouchers, to purchase a large furniture item from Tesco Direct.

All eventually went well, until I came to paying the very small cash balance due......they wouldn't accept my card !!!!!!

Effectively I was trapped, since my vouchers had been converted and allocated.....

so I called the Customer Services....[to which, I might add, I have no complaints whatsoever from the Scottish call centre..]

To be informed, sadly, I would either have to use another card...[not an option] or go into a 'Direct' store and order over the counter..[a 50 mile round trip]...

However, the next problem was, the clubcard vouchers had to be in bar-code form for instore ordering, not email form for online ordering.

[The Customer Services call centre, BTW, did try ordering over the phone, but their system still wouldn't accept my debit card...]

Anyway.....I did the journey [tied in with other trips, so the pain was felt less]...and marvel of marvels, the instore card reader accepted my card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although the patient lady behind the counter had to hard-type my printed-off email Clubcard codes into the machine.....

However, a wily old [and cynical, thankfully] Customer Assistant did make a comment which I thought truly summed up Tesco's attitude.....AND THE ATTITUDE OF OTHER BIG CORPORATE BODIES....to the customer.

Namely...that , for Tesco and others...it isn't what Tesco [and others] can do for the Customer...but what the Customer can do for Tesco.....

    Don't believe me?

Just who has to run around, wait in, take time off work and be at beck 'n call, to the Tesco Direct delivery service?

    Why...the customer, of course!

Nowhere have I seen or heard the phrase ''and what time would be convenient for you to receive delivery, Sir?''

Electricity companies are the same [where meters are still indoors]....why can they not call on a Saturday morning when I'm definitely at home?

Will they call after 5pm? Will they 'eck as like!

Nope..they give me one day's notice and I have to take a day off work to wait....all day...for them to call...losing money in the process.....

[yes, I know they have a statutory right to view the meter, but hang on, weren't the Electricity Boards privatised ? If so, why should they retain these statutory powers? Why shouldn't they be made to treat their customers properly and respectfully?

This degradation of respect for the customer isn't from the shop-floor, or coal-face...it stems from middle and upper management.

As for Tesco? Well, I've pretty much spent my excess Clubcard points.....and since their corporate attitude towards customers actually whiffs, and the overall quality of their foodstuffs has fallen.....prices soaring to boot....I wont be using them again...if at all possible.

I find Lidl to offer competitive pricing, excellent customer service, and [foodstuff] quality to equal the finest. Just don't go in there when they're having a £1 sale....the pensioners are most violent!
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......
  • Tesco have refused to take my co-op visa debit card since Tuesday this week, I had an hours notice that my groceries would not be delivered and did I have another card, there was no option of the driver accepting cash. I had to get my shopping delivered by Sainsburies for the next day as no one could tell me how long the issue would be going on for.

Today I tried to order a highchair from tesco direct and still they are not taking co-op cards, didnt get very far with customer services and they could not accept my order over the phone.

Hmmm, I'm due to place an order next weekend. Methinks I'll just transfer some money into my Barclays account and use that this time. Hopefully they'll have it sorted before Christmas...
