Update on Tesco's & Visa Electron

  • I too had a phonecall from Tesco yesterday basically saying that the problem was with the Coop but the wally on the phone believed I still would be unable to use my card! When I stated that I believed the problem was a giant C**k up by Tesco I was told off for using offensive language!!! So I will try again this afternoon and see if they have fixed it.

  • Hello,

I've been following this thread as I, too, have recently had problems checking out with my Co-Operative Visa Debit card on the Tesco Groceries website.

I've been using the same card for about 10 months with no problems, up until last week when it was recognised as an electron card at checkout.
I rang Customer Services at Tesco and was told that they were working to fix the problem as they were losing hundreds of customers.

Reading through some of the messages here earlier today, it seemed that the problem might have been fixed so I gave it another go, but NO, it still wouldn't accept my card.

Anyway, I think I may have found a 'fix' to the problem which I'd like to share with others who have also encountered this problem.
I went to 'My Account' on the Grocery Home Page and chose the option to store my card details - entered my Co-Operative card number there, and my order was then submitted successfully.

    Hope this works for others.
  • I've just done a shop for Friday and it appears to have gone through OK - I didn't need to save my card number? So will wait and see if it arrives on Friday and let everyone know. Oh and during my phonecall with the sensitive customer service guy I suggested he went on MSE and made note of all our comments but I was rather sniffly told this was a site run by companies with their own interests at heart not ordinary members of the public! (I suspect he muddled us up with another web site LOl)!!!

cd36uk I haven't had a problem with the double charging in around a year so although I wouldn't say it is conclusive proof I think it is rarely a problem now with Asda.

Just an update for those that are interested.... Asda are still up to their old tricks...taking the money and putting a hold on the funds (effectively taking the money twice)
Co-op customer service confirmed this is still an issue.
Right so home delivery wise (no car); Tesco are out, now Asda, that leaves Sainsburys and their expensive prices
  • I'm still using Tesco ok, and had 3 orders since.

However I have also started to use Asda again, and when I asked about the extra charging they said it was fixed. But that appears to be the double charging the final checkout amount; but they are still taking an 'evening before delivery' card authorisation for the full amount, and then, if at checkout time, it's a different amount, they take the final amount causing the previous authorisation to stop for 5 working days. They say that is standard working practice.

My local Asda delivery person told me that they are trying to change how they do substitions on the morning of delivery to stop the different final amount to be different to the authorisation the night before.

So yes, they are still pre-authorisating the night before. Am sure this is to ensure the money is there before they pick the goods.

Tesco don't take the full amount till the morning of delivery, so in the case where the money is not available on the day of delivery, they just ring the driver and tell him told not deliver if it's already left.

So it's just time/cost saving on Asda's part to make sure your 'cash' is there the night before ! but they won't admit to that officially.

The Tesco/Co-op Visa Debit card issue was sorted out as per above posts.

With Tesco, you need to have the money available in your account at the time you place your order and use checkout online. That's when they do their checks to make sure you can pay. However, you also need to make sure the money is available to leave your account and pay for your shopping on the day of delivery. As above, if the money isn't there then the picker won't be able to fully checkout your shopping and it won't be delivered.

So that's just down to managing your finances cos there's no point placing an order if you can't pay for it on the day.

Managing finances is not necessarily the issue, for example I know money goes in my account on Fridays but if I leave ordering the groceries until Friday then the weekend slots are full except for the odd expensive one maybe. So for me I need to place the order during the week whilst there are still available slots to be delivered (for example) at the weekend when the funds will be in my account. This is how I have always done it but now the goalposts have moved it seems.
So I wonder what is the solution for people like me!

Well then you're lucky, I have had two deliveries in two weeks and it has happened both times

Hmm! Maybe my store operates differently.

Anyway it looks as if the Tesco thing has been resolved again.
