I didnt realise how much money i wasted! Mostly on food, i use all spare money for debts, i know its quite dull for a few months, but we have treated ourselves to sky so we watch movies etc if we get bored and have alcohol n friends over etc - i still go shopping just dont buy anything!! And i know its only for a few months.
I am very much like i would rather have nothing than a little bit of something, like with food!! I would rather cut out chocolate altogether, rather than have one bar a week or something - because i cant stop. So if i dont buy anything i cant carry on spending!!
Plus with it coming up to xmas, if theres anything i REALLY want i ask for off mummy n daddy lol - but then we are engaged and saving for a wedding, so when i am tempted i think actually i would rather that £30 (or soemthing) for the wedding to use on this or that, rather than on another pair of shoes..
Thank you ever so much for taking the time out to reply to me. TBH i don't really have any spare to shop so i don't that much! I hav just applied for another job doing 10 extra hours a week, i have a young daughter and don't really want to leave her for another 10 hours but i need more money so needs must!!!!
I ain't even got an interview yet so i may not get it, my current job cannot offer me anymore hours.
Well done for doing so well, good luck for your wedding when is it? xxx0 -
Hi all!!
Im 26 and graduated last year with around £10,000 of debts, Iv been very lucky to secure full time employment and have practically given up my social life which hasnt went down well with my friends in order to get the debt cleared, Im now within finishing distance with my debt free date set at 1st March 2009 (fingers crossed) like every student the money seems free at the time, how smart are students!! lol anyway I do have to say I spent and I enjoyed but I would never do it again I swear to that!! I now want to save £5,000 in 2009 and finally be able to look at a healthy bank balance as I prepare to move to london with my wonderful girlfriend in jan 2010, thankfully she has been finishing her final year in edinburgh (im in belfast) and shes pretty much oblivious to how much debt i was and am in but thankfully this has worked well although its tough being in debt and having your girl a in a different place but weve been strong and things will all work out it just takes time and guys remember good things come to those who wait!!
Good luck to everyone!!!

i'm 23, married, mortgage, and about 50k of extra debt (i think)... just starting out here, need to pluck up the courage to actually tally up my debt.

I'm 22, still at uni but on a gap year in Australia earning some dosh so my debts are frozen at 2000 quid overdraft(s) and 9000 quid student loan. Luckily I'm on the old fees so that only costs me 1200 a year instead of 3000!
The plan is to save up enough dollars to have some free cash when I get back to the UK for uni next year... I get a $20k bonus from my company when I graduate so got to pray for a good exchange rate in the summer of 2010!The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. Further to that, I actually went to uni in debt by nearly 1k thanks to crashing my motorbike and only having 3rd party insurance! Luckily I had a scholarship worth 2k a year which meant I partied my way through my first year... several incredibly stupid financial decisions later (oh the joys of hindsight!) and I had debt collectors and all sorts banging at my door. I also lost the scholarship so was suddenly down to 0 income...
I got a job at the uni and worked 70-80hrs a week all summer just to break even, a tax rebate gave me 500 quid to play with at the start of my second year and the partying began again... before coming to Oz I scrimped and saved for 12months just to pay my rent and buy food, my student loan is less than my rent was so I've done all sorts of weird and wonderful, legal and illegal things to stay afloat.
When the oppurtunity came to go abroad and not get into anymore debt I grabbed at it. Now I'm not losing a penny but neither am I earning anything... everything is paid for but I egt very little cash hence I have to be careful what I spend. Not to mention that I still have things like my phone contract coming out of my UK account...
So after that massive lecture I'm just going to say good luck all you young DFW's and if any of you are going to uni then get saving! I ran myself ragged to have enough cash to keep partying while paying bills and it was totally worth it!The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. I have asked many times on how you have managed to pay off thousands in a few months, no one has answered me yet - lol. I am literally dying to know how, please share xxx
Hi Smarties!
I too was wondering how people managed to pay so much of their debts so quickly! What I have learned so far.....
Reducing spending (on everything, if you haven't already post a SOA on the debt-free wannabe website so the lovely people on here can have a look and make suggestions as to where you may be able to shave off a few pounds)
Daily clicks - sites like quidco etc where you can just click through to some merchants each day and they give you money back (yep... for free), some merchants give you more for getting things like insurance quotes.
Budget - from my SOA I couldn't believe how much money I just waste
Review sites - websites that pay you to review products and places. Qype do challenges - the most recent one was 50 reviews in November and you get a £50 Amazon voucher (all helps you get the things that you need/want without spending)
Move any debt you have to the lowest interest rate possible and pay off in order of interest rate (highest to lowest, obviously whilst still maintaining your minimum payments)
I hope this helps? As I say it is only things that I have picked up in the 2 weeks or so I have been on here!
Good luck!!:Tstart = Wed 19th Nov 2008 £21,225
end = Mon 28th Sept 2015 DEBT FREE!
I love a good plan - it may not work.... but I love a good plan!0 -
I am 27 and me and oh have lots of debt together. have 2 lovely boys and a house (big mortgage) together. think i am going to show oh ths thread though as everyone younger than us seems to be geeting married or already walked up the aisle!! lol!
Our debts came as i have never really understood the value of money, bank of mum and dad would always bail me out so when we moved in together after ds1 was born, i kept spending not realising i had to stand on my own 2 feet and oh didnt know how to reel my spending in. (he had never had a plastic card and paid cash for everything before he met me......ooops!)
He now thinks its hilarious that i am on this site most days getting tips and putting them into practice!
