Advice please - paying someone's debts

Hi guys - a little advice please.

I've recently caught the MSE bug and am now assisting my friend who has been an ostrich for some months.

Moorcroft debt company have requested £50 within 5 days or else they will start legal proceedings.

I have offered to pay this for her by writing a cheque tomorrow (will borrow from my wedding fund) She will pay it back on 1/12

However I have a question. I have never had any dealings with any form of debt companies and despite my large debt, my credit report is in reasonable condition. If I send Moorcroft a cheque, will they then use my details for something? Will it reflect badly on me at some point?

Hope you don't mind me asking and I don't mean to sound nasty - just want to cover myself as I'm really making progress on my DFW journey.

Many Thanks
xx

I am not really sure but I didn't want to post & run..... The company we work for use Moorcrofts, I will try & have a word & see but I don't see any way they should be able to implicate you. I have just asked around & we are all of the opinion that no this should not implicate you in any way. I am sure there is someone on here who will be able to tell you positively. You are being a very nice friend!
:grinheart I'm getting there...... slowly but surely
  • Thanks lexie

I know I may sound a little paranoid but I'm just worried about putting myself at risk through this company.

Hi no i dont think it will afect you, Thay will just be glad to get there money and wont care who has paid it
:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j
  • I paid my oh's default earlier this year and have never heard anything from the company since... maybe put a note in if it'll put your mind at rest?
  • The other option is to lend your friend the money and buy a postal order, which has no bank details on at all. Only drawback is that postal orders have an additional charge. It may be about £55 instead of £50, but you'd have peace of mind.

Been thinking about this more & I definitely don't see how it could affect you as they don't have your address details just a cheque & to be honest I bet they bank it so quickly they won't care who it comes from....

  • Thank you all so much for all your replies

skintandscared - postal orders would be a good idea but I won't be able to get to a post office on time

Claireabelle - I think that is excatly what I'll do, just pop a note in to say I have nothing to do with the account

Lexie - Thanks for your reassurance

Thanks again guys - mind now at ease!

    Take care
