I'd been sceptical about how much money you could save at Lidl but now I'm convinced. Just done my first shopping trip there and compared prices with the equivalent Sainsburys cheapest option:

Chicken thighs 1.85 2.78
Beef roasting joint 4.99 6.55
Pork loin chops 3.49 4.98
Minced beef 1.98 1.58

Sharwoods Passanda sauce 1.29 1.99
Tomato puree 0.25 0.28
Extra mature Cheddar 5.50 6.75
Kidney beans 0.14 0.27
Corned beef 0.58 1.06
Shreddies 0.75 1.14

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

No doubt about it, the German Lidl and Aldi, and also the Danish Netto are a lot cheaper than the British supermarkets. They don't call this country Rip-Off Britain for nothing. Lidl is the nearest supermarket to us, and it's amazing what you can find in there. They are selling celeriacs at the moment. You can make great chips out of them.Small change can often be found under seat cushions.

I'm glad you liked Lidl, I was converted quite some time ago! It took me a few goes to get my head around the way the shelves are stocked and the unknown brands. The £££ difference was the clincher for me too, though IMO what they sell compares favourably to the brand names we are used to if you just give their things a chance. It's hard to understand why there is a certain snobbishness about Lidl, what's so posh about going to Sainsbury and spending an extra 28% on your shopping? Hee hee!0

Yeah I'm very excited - I can probably buy even cheaper by using our local market for fruit/veg and Costco for meat (have to compare prices on that one). With some forward planning and monthly recipes for batch cooking, it's beginning to look as if I might be able to get our food bill down to at most £120/month and still eat really well, which is what I'm aiming for. Light at the end of the tunnel!

The great thing is it's next to one of two train stations I can use, so there's nothing stopping me popping in after work to pick up any really good offers. DH thinks I'm becoming a cost-cutting bore
I've been logging all household spending since 3rd December, so each month I can look at ways to reduce it further, bulk out stews with filling and nutritious veg etc (we eat way too much meat anyway).

Didn't really need a double post but well done on giving Lidl a try. Quality for the most part at good prices. I've got a Tesco, Lidl and Costco all beside one another so it's nice and handy to get the best of all.MFW 2015 #41 = £20,515/£20,515

I like Lidls for some items: mozarella for HM pizzas, creamy coleslaw, milk, ham, butter, rinse aid for DW.
I have now converted to Aldi's for baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, kidney beans, spagetti, rice, meat, cheese.
Both excellent quality though.
