I will be interseted to hear of your shopping experiences at Morrison's.

I have no problems at all with my local Morrisons. It as been in town for over thirty years and is always very busy. Despite having a Asda and Sainsburys near by. The staff are always very helpful and polite and I have never had any mis-priced products. I wonder if it's the old Safeway stores that are having teething problems? icon7.gif
  • Belleooo,

My supsicion is that the problems are down to local mamagement/morale. I don't know if it only relates to former Safeway stores but even if that is the case I would say Morrison's have had long enough to get their act in order. It must be almost 2 years now since they purchased Safeways.

Just based on personal and anecdotal evidence their profits would be even lower if they didn't overcharge customers so regularly.

It does seem a shame really, as in some respects, they offer good value. But things actually seem to be getting worse rather than better in my experience: in terms of over pricing, quality and stock availability and the range of items they sell. I am now begining to mistrust anything that is own brand; prefering to stick to stables like milk and branded goods. Which is a shame because I actually thought that Morrison's acquiistion of Safeway would be a good thing for consumers: introducing more choice and competion. With hindsight, I think Morrison bit off more than they could comfortably chew.
  • Regularly overcharged at Morrison's, always check receipt before leaving store and also have a miserable woman who works on c/s - does the original poster shop in my local Morrisons?

Particular favourite in my local Morrisons is to put a differing item behind the BOGOF's - i.e. different weight item that doesn't qualify for BOGOF or different variety that's not included - have had many visits to c/s over this one - since reading the Tesco thread have realised that Trading standards may well be interested in this practice, something I may point out next time it happens to me.

Also they aren't to quick at removing the BOGOF's that are out of date (usually in very small writing somewhere on the SEL) -had one or two arguments over this practice in the past.
  • My friend and I quite often find discrepencies on our reciepts always to Morrisons gain, we usually end up having to wait in a q at the customer service desk just to get our money back, and that is even if we notice the mistake while still at the till.

I never leave the shop without checking my bill.

I find Morrisons vegetables are poor quality,I have been told that our local store only gets 2 deliveries of fresh vegetables a week.
I now buy all mine at the Market.

I have noticed this quite a lot at my local Morrisons too. Luckily I do check all my receipts before disposing of them and just this week noticed some packs of Walkers crisps that were on a multibuy saving where no saving has been taken off.

It is a pain taking the receipt back especially as I had just done this weeks shopping, but the customer services staff are pretty good .

My local store was never a Safeway.

I do keep shopping there as they have a lot of BOGOF offers that I would buy anyway and the fruit and vegies are good too. I just have to make sure I always check the receipt, but it makes you wonder how many people are losing money because they don't.
  • As someone who used to manage pricing / admin in Safeway and Morrisons, remember the human error aspect. Every single one of those price labels are put on by hand. Issues may be:

    1. Head Office neglect to ensure prices sent to the store are 100% correct.
    2. They print off the store printer incorrectly, or the odd one does.
    3. Some Saturday student who really cant be bothered throws some away, when putting each label into sections to be put out by hand. (Or even tears one by mistake and throws it in the bin, without telling anybody).
    4. The person putting out the labels cant find some of the products and presumes that the store does not stock that product.
    5. The person checking the price labels put out cant find the product either or is feeling groggy from the night out before and ticks checked on the report, but has not really checked.

Just some of the issues that these poor people who work in retail have to contend with. That coupled with the fact that there are 2500 price changes every week, surely there will be the odd human error.
Yes it should be 100% and yes it is a legal requirement, but managing this process is a thankless task.
These price labels dont just appear on the shelf in the correct place, there are so many factors involved.

As a regular shopper at Morrison's I have become rather surprised and irritated by the number of pricing error's on recent visits to the Morpeth store.

Since the coversion from a safeways there have been an increasing number of special offers, some of which are very good value. However the shop seems unable to ensure that you actually pay the price that is advertised.

Having been bitten more those once - by discovering that I have been overcharged after returning home with the shopping I do take care to ensure that where there is a BOGOF or a price reduction advertised that this is actually reflected in the price I pay. I have noticed that as many as 1 in 4 reductions are scanned incorrectly.

This wouldn't be quite so bad if the staff were at all sympathetic to your plight. Typically you are kept waiting whilst they check that you have been overcharged, and then you are just given back what you are righfully owed.
Often after waiting several minutes. You then need to sign for getting back, what is in effect, your own money.

Unusually I actually took the time and trouble to contact Morrison's Customer Services Department over a recent case of over charging - mainly because of the downright rude attitide of, as it turned out, the Personnel Manager, who delt with me. Its quite instructive that the phone intially rang unanswered (at 6.15pm). I hadn't expected it to be manned but phoned because I was so annoyed. Then surprisingly the phone was answered and I put through to the Department even though they had left for the day. Eventually, I got through and a week later received a £5 voucher as a "gesture of goodwill"

Its my understanding that's its illegal for a store to display misleading pricing information. Whilst I accept that Morrison's will refund the money if their error is pointed out to them I believe that:

    (i) The frequency of errors in unacceptable.
(ii) The onus is entirely upon the customer to spot the errors and
(iii) That large numbers of customers must frequently be overcharged by Morrisons.

I just wondered whether other customers had experience similar problems with Morrisons and if so, whether they had had a satisfactory response from ttheir Customer Services' Department.

I will be interseted to hear of your shopping experiences at Morrison's.

Af first I thought you were talking about the Penrith store, right down to the rude customer 'service' supervisor. In fact on one occasion I was told that they would refund THEIR pricing error as a "gesture of good will".

If it wasn't for the fact that it is the cheapest supermarket I certainly wouldn't step foot in that store again.

The Kendal store though couldn't be more different. Friendly staff, cheaper prices and altogeather a nicer experience.

It doesn't help that we have been told that the Penrith store has more expensive prices as it is a tourist area. (this was told to us by one of their managers)
  • I can understand the possibility of human error, but that doesn't expalin why Morrison's (or at least some of their stores) are so much worse than their competitors.

It seems unlikely that the problem lies (directly) with head office as some stores seem to be significantly better than others.

I have to say its my observation that morale doesn't seem very good in my local store - to put it mildly. Ultimately Head Office is responsible for that.

If Morrsions can't manage the range of special offers they advertise, both in store and in the media they have two options:

    (i) Devote extra resources to it.
(ii) Or limit the promotions to the level they can manage effectively.

I don't think any of the explanations, though, excuses rudeness - particularly when it comes from the person running the Customer Services desk.

I to have been "caught" with the BOGOF one. Somethings you can get a different variety and then other times you cant and get charged for both. When I ask at CS just get " that's how it is". But as a customer how do you know.
This may shake them up, Next time your overcharged and have to go to CS. Ask for a copy of the form they ask you to sign , there name (just as a witness) and the Managers name ,because you need it to send off to Trading Standards. Pointing out what they are doing is illegal.
Love to hear what they say.
