A 'how do you do that!?' moment.

One of the things I get a kick out of is showing others how to cook something and have them go Wow! I've just made a breakfast for the two of us and a guest out of bread, frozen mushrooms (that I'd cooked down earlier and frozen off) mashed potato, bacon misshapes and an egg.

Potato cakes with bacon and an egg to bind fried in a little bacon fat from the trimmings on the off cuts of bacon served on toast with the mushrooms. Not so difficult you might think but the look of shock on our guests face when it was being made was a picture. And the comments...

"Potato for breakfast?" "1 egg between 3?" "2 rashers of bacon!" It was funny. Now I do preach a bit about cooking cheaply but some friends just think that it involves buying foamy value bread and depriving yourself.

They enjoyed it and are still full now!

Anyone else had one of those 'how do you do that!' moments? I love 'em.:D

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

  • Sounds awesome. I have been known to do similar things, chuck leftover roast veges cut up small on the next days pizza or something and people sort of watch you doing it and don't say much and later on they are amazed by it.

Make stale bread into french toast, that impresses people, generally don't let on it was stale bread though, haha, just say how about we have french toast for brunch instead of a sandwich for lunch :p

One guest is always surprised when he sees how small the roast I am going to cook is and amazed by how I manage to feed everyone with it, just make enough stuffing, enough roast veges, etc, and it goes a lot further than you would think. If there are even more guests serve with a loaf of bread fresh from the oven lol and they are commenting like it is the best meal they have had in years...

And the amount of times you are asked for crumble recipes? :rotfl: And people don't get it when you say, just some fruit that needed using up, mixed together, topped with a bit of oats/flour/spices/sugar/butter mixed together and cooked. Actually my curse is more like not being able to make the same thing twice, I have never had something turn out exactly the same lol :o

Having seen it in expensive 'National Trust' type tearooms, I've recently started making bread pudding again. Used up some left-over birthday sponge and stale crusts with fruit (on offer at the moment pre-Christmas), egg, spices. It was delish.

My mother is legendary for that, starts as Beef Stroganof ends up as Morrocan Chicken, looks like Baked Alaska but tastes great. I'm doing her a disservice. She's great at cooking but it's never quite the same. I can be similar.

I had the pancake mix conversation with my guests last night. Pancake batter is a sachet of flour with a pinch of salt. That's it! Why not buy flour. They couldn't believe that until I showed them a pancake recipe.

And then one dared to mention pasta sauce...

  • I recently made a rich tea loaf for the first time. It was delish and heavy like a xmas cake, except in slices. I found myself thinking if I covered that in marzipan and royal icing that could by my Xmas slice.:D Then again I could probably not do it as well next time.:rotfl:Hubby bought a pumkin yesterday encouraged by the kids no doubt:rolleyes: Anyhoo there is no way I am making a lantern. I have plans for pumpkin soup and some posh cake roll filled with cream cheese, which I have never done before. Good job I've defrosted some minced meat, to do a chilli along side then:rotfl:
