Tesco's Discounted Brands?

They certainly don't sell them in Aldi or Lidl. Aldi's dishwasher tablets are called "Almat" and Lidl's are branded "W5". Different product, different make, different name.0

This discussion interests me as I have been wondering since Tesco started the 'fight back' against Lidl, Aldi etc by stocking branded products that the likes of Aldi and Lidl supposedly stock, at lower prices compared to the branded ones they usually stock. My theory is that they have simply repackaged what they have always sold but in cheaper looking packaging. I think they are trying to target loyal customers who are tempted by Aldi etc who are considering trying those stores by making us think they can get those brands at Tesco without switching to a different store. I bought some 'Sun Grown' Cous Cous which was presented as an item also sold by the cheaper stores. The 'sticker' on the front says 'Discount brands at Tesco' but if you run your nail over it it is printed onto the packet so it was never going to be sold anywhere but at Tesco! It also made me laugh as it said 'lemon and coriander cous cous', then underneath, by way of a further description usually intended to persuade us further to buy such a wonderful product - Cous cous flavoured with lemon and cous cous! Come on Tesco, do you think we are thick?!:p :mad:0

Tesco has seen a mass exodus of customers to Lidl in the Republic of Ireland. Now, with the credit crunch starting to bite, they fear the same for the UK.
Whether copying Aldi and Lidl (and not very well at that) and sticking "discount" on their products formerly known as Tesco Value is going to help, remains to be seen.
How about a genuine and general price-drop instead?0 -
I can't understand why they are calling them discount "brands". They're not brands, they're just Tesco own brand0

Been buying the washing powder for colours for some months now as it's been significantly cheaper than Tesco's own brand. However, I have noticed something peculiar about it. My washing machine, and therefore powders etc, are in our outhouse, which, like many such buildings, has an issue with damp. The Daisy washing powder seems to act like a magnet to moisture! It doesn't seem to affect the powder too much, but the box is pretty soggy up as far as there is powder left! Never had that with washing powders before, so can only assume the Daisy one has some different ingredient?
I had the exact thing happen to my box! The box was soaking, so I started rummaging in my cupboard looking for a leak, but everything else was dry!0 -
I can't make sense of it (Tesco Discount, that is).
What they're actually communicating is
"Hey folks, no need to go to the discounters. Look: we can do high quality at discount prices, too."
To which my belly reaction is:
"Can you now? So what took you so damn long!?"0 -
I got a packet of the Market Value oranges this morning on the way to work... 59p for 6, they were of the Valencia variety, grown in South Africa - very nice as well, a bargain at that price! Will definitely be buying them again.0

Yes those oranges are fine.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

The pizzas are good, also the ham and the lettuce and tomatoes and british apples.0
