    Hi everyone

Firstly hugs to those that need them ...... cw18, still thinking of you here xxx

Congrats on the growing bump Bashful :j :D

Apologising for not posting much but it's coming up to Xmas and I have 3 birthdays to sort out too (DD1, DD2 and mine - didn't plan things very well did I? ) as well as pressies for the whole family ! Done well though, the shops have some really good deals/bargains at the moment so I'm quids in on budgets :T

I've currently got Mango Chutney on the go (got the mangoes reduced at sainsburys and they were b1g1f :D ). MIL made some and it was so nice that a small jar all went in one go :o !

Been to the butchers and got the meat for the week and have a lovely storecupboard stock now so hopefully it'll just be the essentials and meat each week that I need to buy.

Having chicken curry tonight (with the 4p Sainsburys curry sauce - which is now over 20p I understand  ).

Found a really good discount store that is excellent for tins and various other bits - most of it is short dated but I've either frozen it or will use it up fairly quickly. Got some Lloyd Grossman soups (2kg cartons, strange measurement  ) for £1 each so that will keep us going. Still have a few of the soups I made from garden produce but not enough to last us so thought these were a good buy !

I'm trying to run my freezer down for Xmas (good time to stock up as most of the big supermarkets here sell off their meat cheap on xmas eve, including turkeys !) Still have lots of veg left in the freezer from our garden (mostly runner beans :rotfl: ) so shouldn't need to buy any veg for a few weeks.

Right i'm off to stir my chutney. Thanks for all the new recipes (keep them coming :T ) ..... hope everyone has a lovely day xxx

  • Just popping in while at work and before eve class...jtb why not share the recipe with all of us - as long as you clearly state where you got it from then its ok to let us know - its only when you dont quote author/title that it becomes an issue - that way we all get a new recipe!
Hope youre all ok...hugs CW and hello Weezle(s) if youre looking in...suspect you may be lying down in a dark room though! Hugs!

Ahhhhhh thanks for that ISOM, I'm never sure what were allowed and not allowed to put on here - can be a bit of a minefield ! lol

Just about to have dinner and then i'll do it. It's quite an easy one but prep takes a bit of time (don't they all  - but I've got a chutney 'sous chef' in the form of hubby :D:p which makes it a bit easier and quicker !)

I bought 6 mangoes (one of which was a bit too over-ripe _pale_ ) so used 5 and it made enough for 3 large jars (4p Sainsbury curry sauce size ;):D ) and one small 'taster' jar so plenty to go round !

    Back in a bit .......

    evening all,

*waves feebly at you with half shutting eyes*

not quite sure what's happened to my va-va-voom of late.... think fergus has eaten it:eek:

lovely to see folk chatting away and new people posting, I do find it all very inspiring.

Ceridwen, if as I suspect you will want nowt to do with slug pellets then can i recommend a strip of copper pipe round the top edge of your beds, hammered flat (photo on my much neglected blog!) :D All the best with that.

ISOM, what lovely jewelry! :T:T:T I will cost your risotto for you, but have no maths brain this evening!

In Weezl towers things are progressing well... We are keeping on track with the budget, whilst having occasional fish and chips from fun budget to make the DIY feel like it has a reward at the end of it.

He is worried he will roll over and commit Fergicide in his sleep. I have tried to soothe him by saying how in a decade of bed-sharing with me he has not managed Weezlcide, but he reckons he did squish my boob once in 2002.

Note to all those considering fudge as a christmas gift idea- make more than you intended to give away :o:rolleyes::D

    Catch you all soon,

With love and many hugs (Cw18, that means you! :) ), Weezl, Fergus and Acetate Monkey xxx

My dh was always concerned he would squash one of our ds's and he is a heavy sleeper.. I got a bed guard (designed for toddlers bed's) and put it on the side of my bed (doublecheck any gaps are filled with a rolled towel so that it is firm up to the mattress) and baby would sleep between me and the bed guard. The other thing I did (and sometimes still do if a littlie pops into bed with us) is sleep with my arm gently round/over ds - means dh would roll onto my arm/hand first or now to make sure ds's don't fall out of bed ;)

Here's the chutney recipe for those that wanted it :D (from 'The Complete Book of Preserves and Pickles' by Catherine Atkinson and Maggie Mayhew).

900g/2lb mangoes, halved, peeled and stoned
    1/2 tsp salt
    225g/8oz cooking apples, peeled
    1/2 pint distilled malt vinegar
    200g/7oz demerara sugar
    1 onion, chopped
    1 garlic clove, crushed
2 tsp ground ginger (I used fresh)

    1. Slice mango flesh into chunks and place in a large non-metallic bowl. Sprinkle with salt and set aside while you prepare the apples.

    2. Cut apples into quarters and remove and discard the cores and peel. Chop roughly

    3. Put malt vinegar an sugar in a preserving pan and heat very gently until the sugar has dissolved completely (stir occasionally).

    4. Add mangoes, apple, onion, garlic and ginger and bring slowly to the boil, stirring occasionally.

    5. Reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, stirring frequently towards the end of the cooking time until the chutney is reduced to a thick consistency and no excess liquid remains.

    6. Spoon into warmed sterilized jars, cover and seal.

Store in a cool dark place and allow to mature for at least 2 weeks before eating.

Keeps for up to a year. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 3 months.

    Variation

To make it with a bit of a kick de-seed and slice two green chillis and stir into the chutney with the garlic and ginger.

Had a little taste and it's very nice :D:p

Have a nice evening everyone xx

I'm hopefully getting an allotment in the new year, and one of the things I will be growing is chard. We love it but can't buy it here (used to eat loads of it in South Africa) and it's the only leafy green which my DH will eat.

I'm going to be trying the square foot gardening method. It's going to be hard work getting the allotment going  - it's a field which is currently being converted so it's not as if I'm stepping into a currently used one. The children are keen to have their own little "patch" in there too, which is good. Does anybody now how long a "pole" is? Apparently it's going to be 5 x 2.5 poles.

A pole is 5.5 yards, 4 poles in a chain, 40 poles in a furlong - where did they get these ideas from???
