Wii, Wii Fit & Wii Bundles Discussion

The rush to get a 'Wii' for Christmas is already beginning and my colleagues are already asking around for tips on where you can get 'Wii fit' and which bundles are good value so I thought we should begin a discussion to offer tips to those buying a Wii this Christmas.
Most 'Wii' newbies don't know what they should be getting with their Wii as standard, how much they should be paying, whether they need a nunchuck, or what a Wiimote is.
You should expect to pay no more than £179.99 for your Wii console. With your console, you should receive Wii Sports, a controller (also known as a Wiimote) and a nunchuck.
Wii fit should set you back £69.99 from any highstreet store (once you can find it in stock that is!)
Additional controlers should cost you £29.99 for a wiimote and £15 for a nunchuck.
Now you know what you should be expected to pay for these items, you need to work out whether you are making a saving or a loss by purchasing a bundle. This year, most bundles seem to be charging you what you'd expect to pay for the items individually - it appears to be for pure convenience that they've put all the things you want together for you.
Unfortunately, if you look what is actually included in the bundle you'll find items missing like nunchucks or Wii sports which means your paying more for the convenience of buying things together, and getting less.
If you are going into stores to look at bundles write down the prices of what you should be expected to pay for the individual items and take it with you to compare to the price of the bundles.

good idea for a thread! many bundles are rip offs with shops forcing you to buy extra stuff you dont really want!0

Not only have my colleagues been asking me for advice but it really annoyed me when I was in a Game store the other day and the assistant was selling all this stuff to this unsuspecting shopper that he simply didn't need for the wii! The trouble is there's so many different things out there now people dont know what is essential for gaming and what they can do without (like the sports packs where you get a tennis racket and a golf club! They might be fun but their not essential and buying a Wii and the essential accessories can be expensive enough without those added extras)
Its important to check prices for Wii games because alot of the games you get in the bundle you'll be charged £30 each for them but in reality you can pick them up for £10 or so.
Sega Superstar Tennis is only £10 in Woolies at the moment but in the bundles they claim its worth £34.99!!
You'll only really need the nunchuck if you intend to do the boxing, play family ski or Tomb Raider. If you've managed to secure one when you bought your Wii console that should be sufficient to keep the family happy over Christmas. However if your picking up games with Party games to play over Christmas you may find you'll need more than one nunchuck to play some of the games. If your not sure, stick a question on here and I'm sure someone with that game will get back to you
We've got two Wiimotes and two Nunchucks. I think we've only ever used more than one nunchuck on a handful of occasions.
Atleast two Wiimotes are handy, especially if you buy Mario Kart. The Wiimotes don't come with the Wii Wheels so if you have two Wii Wheel's you'll need two Wiimotes.
... and my final tip of the day is, if your buying from HMV BUY ONLINE!!!
They'll charge you up to 1/3 extra if you buy it instore! Delivery online is free so there's no good reason (other than an item being out of stock ofcourse) why you shouldn't order online!0 -

Disagree - use the nunchuck instead of the provided wheel for Mario Kart; I find the wheel oversteers (but I am rubbish; slightly less rubbish with the nunchuck). My DD prefers the nunchuck too hence we have two, but my son bought a traditional playstation style joystick controller and he likes to use that. None of us like the wheel.
But try it first and see what is your personal preference, the extras can easily be bought LATER when you know what you need. They are pretty available everywhere, unlike the wii fit!0 -
You disagree and agree in the same sentence.
I was never intending to make this a thread on peoples personal preference when it came to controllers - just one where people buying a Wii for the first time can get the basics and know what the controllers are without paying more than they need to.;)0 -
For the extra Wii remote you may as well buy Wii play that comes bundles with a remote. Play.com currently have them in stock for £27.99 with free delivery

I was looking at eBay for second hand consoles etc. Be aware that some people were selling Wii Play WITHOUT the extra remote - so if it looks like to be a bargain.. check again to see what is (or isn't!) included.0 -
Likewise people sell replacement 'Wii sports' boxes as when you buy your console your Wii sports disc will come in a cardboard sleeve. Their not selling you the game in the box, their selling you a plastic box!
Its worth shopping around for any game - prices do vary between retailers. You can pick up Super Smash Bros from play.com for £27.99. That's the cheapest I've seen it anywhere. Its not a massive saving thoughAt the end of the day its Mario and the retailers know it will sell. They don't have to sell it off cheap.
We pick up plenty of brand new games from ebay for £10 or less. My OH is far more savvy than I in this respect, he's got it down to a fine art! You just have to be careful and make sure your buying a PAL game.
Buying anything that's marked as 'used' is risky. We've bought three used game, two were in a barely usable condition and one was in perfect condition.0 -
We bought a wii from Amazon a couple of weeks ago to put away for xmas -its going to be a family present so no arguments over who owns it. It came with sports, free Carnival game and you could select another game (not large selection) for £20 -we chose indianna jones as we know son will love that. Carnival game ideal as we have young children and they should be able to have a go at that.
We did buy a sports pack for about £6.50 as well, thought would be good for the kids. Previously Argos were doing the wii including a mega sports pack supposedly worth about £30 -glad I didnt go for that.
Obviously we parents had to test it out -nothing worse than xmas day and things dont work. Had an evening playing the sports and it was great fun -and I'm not usully into computer games etc. Took a lot of will power to put it back in the box for 4 months!0
