Where's that post gone?

There was a post on here yesterday that went slightly off topic but had some interesting points nonetheless - this morning it has gone. It was initially a rant about people who get into debt and then cop out of their responsibilities. There was a bit of narkiness creeping in but surely nothing worth *deleting* the post for? Can contentious posts not just be locked? Or was something posted leter on that breached the forum rules?

  • It was deleted last night sometime...I dont know why?
  • I appreciate that a post might breach the rules of a forum (though not knowingly in any of my contributions) but most forums just lock the post, rather than censor the whole conversation....???? (If this is what's happened)
  • Maybe it got really nasty last night? *shrugs*

A member reported my posts to the abuse team as being rude and abusive to other members as they obviously went against the grain a little. The thread went no further to probably what you had already seen!

Yes, I was having an exchange of PMs last night with Sofa_Sogood about this. It seems a little extreme to delete the entire thread, given that it was generally a really healthy and intelligent debate. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and during the time that I was involved in the debate, I saw nothing that could have been interpreted as abuse.

If helen21 said something specific that was offensive, why didn't abcon just edit or delete that post?

If it is simply against the spirit of the Debt Free Wannabe board to have strong and potentially offensive opinions about the ways people try to get out of debt, could the thread not just have been moved to the Discussion Time board?

  • It makes it look like censorship of what I thought at the time was quite a lively (if at times heated) debate. As I mentioned before, the practice on most messageboards I've frequented is to lock the post and/or warn the poster.

If it's not supposed to be a free and open forum for debate here then fine, but I got the impression it was - if someone has views that are contentious in the context of the overall forum then why shouldn't there be a reasonable debate amongst those who frequent the board?

I asked for the offensive post to be pointed out to me by the member and was willing to go re-read but member decided not to bother and report it for thread to be deleted. My posts although a little against the debt-free wannabe, were not rude or offensive nor where they directed at any member. Think the thread just upset some people who dont like opinions that differ to there own! But felt my opinions are mine, as much as others are there's! And if i did offend anyone you think it such a nice forum that a quick pm to me to state this would have been sufficient!

Folks. I'll be honest I have no idea why the thread is deleted, but I have just read this. You have to understand these 'deleting' calls aren't easy. There are so many posts on the forum, quick calls sometimes have to be made. Many peoples view on 'acceptibility' when people get into rucks differ. I'm sorry if some good debate was deleted, but please remember there are currently around 100,000 words being written on this forum a day and to balance the resources of keeping the forums going and proper moderation means a few times things have to go even when they're not such a problem

Actually, I asked for the thread to be looked at, and I didn't get into any further dicussion with Helen21 because I felt there was no point. I considered a PM but wasn't up for being flamed at the end of a long day. The abuse controller or whatever they are called decided to delete it after reading it - the reason given to me was that it was not appropriate for the debt-free wannabe board because some of the views expressed (no doubt including my own) could upset people coming on for help with debt.

Perhaps we should have the debate again over at the Moneysavers' Arms?
