Sainsbury's Missing Items?

A friend emailed Sainsburys on Thursday to ask what was happening and no reply as yet.

"Thank you for your email. I am sorry you have been unable to buy our bath foam and basics handwash recently. I can appreciate how annoying this must be for you.

I have looked into this for you and can confirm that our basics handwash has not been discontinued. We have been experiencing supply issues with this product. However, I have checked on the system and we are due to receive a delivery on the 20 July. If you speak to my colleagues at the customer service desk, they will be happy to locate the item for you. To help them, please give them our product code which is 6301073.

You also mentioned in your email you have been unable to buy our bath foam which is priced at 69p. I have spoken with my colleagues here at the store support centre and they have confirmed to me that this have been removed from the shelves.

I appreciate how frustrating it is one of your favourite products is withdrawn. We never take such decisions lightly, because we know some customers will be disappointed. Sometimes we decide to discontinue items if they are not popular over an extended period. We use this opportunity to introduce new items and extend ranges that are more popular with our customers. We continue to monitor all customer feedback.

I have passed your comments on to our buyers. If enough customers want to see the bath foam back on the shelves, we will certainly do our best to provide it.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. I am sorry that I cannot give the answer you were hoping for and I hope you will find a suitable replacement.

Fair enough I guess and nice to have a personalised email. BASICS HANDWASH will return but the Sainsburys Foam Bath range has been discontinued it seems. I will rush out to Tesco tomorrow and stock up before they do the same and I end up having to shell out for Palmolive or Radox.

Speaking generally, I would imagine that more people than eevr before are buying basics/value brands, supermarkets are feeling the pinch too (thse brands obviously have much lower margins) and so are either going to increase the margin & price of these basic brands or stock less so that we are forced to buy one brand level higher. Obviously this will only work if Mr T down the road also does the same - interesting to wait and see the results, I guess.

It all became clear with my weekly shop yesterday...

The Creme Bath (79p - 1 litre) vanished and it's replacement appeared - a Foam Bath (88p and 750ml). So its got smaller and more expensive.

Now the frozen potato croquettes have vanished. I expect to see them back in a month - smaller bag for a higher price! I suppose this bypasses having to admit you are raising prices - you just delete the item and reintroduce something very similar at a high price.

A few of the things I buy regularly have disappeared recently. The "Sainsburys Kids" range of fruit in little pots (like Del Monte Fruit Express) and a couple of the "Kids" ready meals have gone completely, Moo flavoured milk has gone and yesterday I noticed their own brand spray on laundry stain remover has gone. I overheard another customer asking a member of staff where the natural bran had gone and I suggested they try Holland & Barrett, and the member of staff agreed with me! :rolleyes: If they carry on like this I'll have to go somewhere else!
