Computer keeps restarting cant get into windows

Problem with new DVD writer
I have replaced my CD drive with a DVD writer. It plays DVD's and my photos but it won't write to a DVD. It is also have problems reading data only. It seems to take ages to read a DVD. I bought a Novotech own brand writer. Should I ask for a replacement for a Pioneer or NEC brand? It is 3 days old.
