Global equity exposure - active and passive
Hi, In setting up the global component of a portfolio I was thinking about mixing a tracker with a couple of active funds. The rationale behind that would be that when the markets turn down, so will very likely do the tracker, therefore I would be relying on the active fund to mitigate the downturn (very aware of the risks…

Dividend witholding tax - Luxembourg domiciled ETFs
Anyone know why dividends received by U.K. investors in Luxembourg domiciled ETFs do not have any witholding tax deducted whereas the U.K.:Luxembourg double taxation treaty states a rate of 15%? Is there some kind of special exemption for an ETF as opposed to other types of companies domiciled in Luxembourg?

Evenlode
Does anyone have any thoughts on Evenlode Global please? I'm looking at dumping some cash in a GIA and whilst I have LT Global and Fundsmith in my ISA I'm wondering if it would be sensible to spread things around a little whilst hoping to stick to a "conviction" theme in good companies. Half the holding would be a…

Hi, I am just trying to get hold of my finances for the future and have had a session with an IFA and was shocked at the cost involved to be honest. I don't think my finances are that complicated, and i am reasonably intelligent, so I wandering if I can just do this myself with a bit of effort, and save the cost? My…

I have a SIPP containing approximately £525k (£32k cash - the remainder in funds) held via the Hargreaves Lansdown platform and I chose one of their 'adventurous' fund choice automatic fund selections but have added to these over the last year or so when consolidating various other pensions. I chose 'adventurous' fund…

Exchanging HISA?
I called Barclays to open a Help to Buy ISA and asked if I could exchange from Halifax. They said I could only exchange £1200 and would need to withdraw the rest from Halifax without the bonus. They then checked with a manager and came back with the same answer. Is this correct? Your HISA provider can lower their interest…

Investing £101k
I have £101k to invest and I am looking for investment advice, having not dabbled in investments before. My intent would be to invest for 5 to 10 years as a growth fund. The reason for the £101k is the extra £1k seems to push up the amount into new cheaper fee bands. For the past couple of months, I've been researching…

What are the benefits & cons should the UK leave the EU?
I ask this question only to debate and encourage understanding from a financial perspective. This could cover, but is not limited to, pensions, savings, income, mortgages, etc. I am not asking the question based on the referrendum result or the subsequent general election which selected the manifesto the country wanted…

SHOCKED - broker executed trades, but missed bookings in cash statement
Ladies / Gents, I did a simple calculation to see what my YTD return is. There was a material difference and the broker forgot to book 3 (!) separate items as cash inflow: - I sold a stock twice which the broker did not book as cash inflow - The broker did not book 2 separate dividends In total, the value of the non-booked…

Role of corporate bonds in a portfolio
A recent thread has asked about the role of gilts in a modern portfolio and the response has been that they manage risk. Gilts have been negatively correlated with equity historically and so including them dampens the overall volatility of a portfolio. Makes sense to me. What makes less sense is what role (if any)…

Baillie Gifford American fund.
I have a holding in this fund which is currently showing a profit of well over 30% for me. The fund price is still marching upwards! I'm facing the problem that many investors have faced, what to do now? To take the profit and leave the balance, increase the holding or totally sell all or what?

Problems with setting up a Nationwide a/c online
I have received my card, PIN & account number for a Flex Direct a/c with Nationwide, but when I enter my customer number it also asks for my passnumber, which I don't have because it didn't ask me to create one. I thought I must have to re-register online again, but it won't accept my email address because it was used last…
