What are your views on Friendly Societies?
Hi, I've found a leaflet in my monthly magazine for the Scottish Friendly. As the headline was "Tax-Free savings allowance", I opened it up and read throug it. Basically you open a 10 year saving plan paying in £15-£25 pm without paying and that's on top of having any ISA's. As I've never heard of this type of…

Is Banking Really 'free' as they claim?
Here's an interesting way of looking at it: I guess the flaw in their argument is that they don't take into account arranged loans such as mortgages, which perhaps constitute the bulk of bank lending?

Anybody put their money in 'things' ?
Just wondering if anybody who is disillusioned with crappy interest rates and the uncertainty of the stock market has decided to buy something material with their savings as an investment and, if so, what have you bought? P

How long can this rise in shares last?
My 10yr old Stock & Shares ISA has nearly climbed back up to 2008 levels in the last month, which is astonishing, as I'd virtually written it off as being not one of my better decisions. It's not a lot & I don't really need the money, but I'm wondering if I should get out now while I can. I don't understand anything about…

Should I pay mortgage off completely?
Hi, I'm 56yrs old and coming to the end of my mortgage soon but not sure whether to pay it off completely or leave a small amount outstanding. Tax on Savings?
I have a question: I'm semi retired, not pension age yet and do not earn enough to pay 20% tax. However I do have a few savings accounts. When I get these statements though tax at 20% has already been deducted. Now I know I should send each of the providers an i85 form (I think) and I will get around to it. But, my…

Northern Rock/Virgin Money interest error
Virgin Money have been sending out cheques for ex-Northern Rock e-Saver accounts as there was a minor discrepancy in the advertised interest rate. Does anyone know if these cheques have been paid net of savings tax? In addition accounts with a zero balance/dormant seem to have been closed in their system migration.
