Winter cycle clothing bargains?
Hello all. As the evenings are getting colder I'm finding myself far less motivated to get out on my bike! Some winter gloves, a merino long sleeved top and something to keep my legs warmer would probably help. Base layers in particular seem to be quite steep. I suspect that there's a premium for cycle specific clothing.…

Getting back on the bike
Hi! Hoping others may be able to help, may have been in my position (hopefully not though) and conquered it! I got knocked off my bike by a lorry, way back in Feb, it passed me, but on a bend and moved in too soon, didn't see me, didn't stop. I was in hospital for 2 days and was really lucky to not be seriously injured -…

Ideas for cyclist to keep eardrums warm!
I have an ear complaint and I ride a bike. Cold air makes my eardrums painful and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what I can use to keep my ears warm. I've tried a hat, but I can't get my helmet on on top of it. I usually put cotton wool in my ears but this isn't satisfactory because it muffles my hearing and ear…

Protecting my season ticket
I purchased my annual season ticket last Monday & the magnetic strip on the back has already failed twice. Apparently this is happening because it's kept too close to my mobile phone or work pass. I know the simple answer to this question is 'keep them apart', but in a handbag that can be tricky! I heard a while ago about…

Cycling misconceptions
Anyone got any? I saw this one today: http://www.oxfordtimes.co.uk/news/10025816.Update__Pensioner_injured_in_Didcot_crash_yesterday_has_died/ "A 67-year-old cyclist who was seriously injured in a collision in Didcot died in hospital this afternoon. The man, from Didcot, was riding a silver racing bicycle when he and a…

Cyclists - what irritates you most about other cyclists?
I'm still waiting for the Helmet Debate on the new forum section :D . I'm not anti-helmet, but choose to wear one only in bad weather, and only recently gave up motorcycling after being cut up once too often, this time by a speeding lorry driver, so I know how some things can dent your confidence, but the sight of a…

Preparing for a long (and money-saving!) ride (500 miles)
Hi all, I thought I'd start a wee thread that I can keep updated between now and next June, when I shall be riding from Edinburgh to London for the charity Missing People  The event is sponsored and there is a company organising the logostics. However, the costs of the equipment fall to each rider. I have allocated a…

Train full - free upgrades to 1st class
Hi all When I first joined MSE someone created a post saying how you can get a free upgrade to a vacant 1st class seat if the train was full. He did this by carrying around a copy of the T&Cs of travel (one condition apparently makes mention of seat provision) and producing it in the right situation. I have searched MSE…

First Transpennine Express (York and Leeds to Manchester/Liverpool)
Yeah it's another rant. You'd think a route serving 4 major British cities (well York is always packed full of tourists anyway) would have trains with a larger amount of carriages. I go from Leeds to Manchester some mornings to get to work. There's also the trains that First put on some mornings which are waaaaaaaaay too…

Railcard Advice
I purchased a 16-25 Railcard on 21/10/2012. On the same day I also purchased tickets for travel on 03/11/2012 and 04/11/2012 with the railcard discount applied. The railcard has not yet arrived. I rang the ATOC helpline today who said they would send another card in the post. However this is unlikely to reach me in time…

Bank station: Waterloo & City Line with heavy luggage
Hi I'm hoping to get the Waterloo and Cit Line from Bank on Friday, (midday) rather than an expensive taxi. I'll have heavy luggage with me. Does anyone know the best entrance to Bank station, and if I can get to the W&C platform without having to go down lots of steps? Cheers
