Government bond or annuity?
Would it be possible, legal, feasible to invest in the government pensioner bonds instead of buying an annuity? Because then you would still have the capital to pass on to your children and grandchildren. Those that I am looking at cannot be bought until you are 60.

40% tax payer: how can I claim back the extra tax relief?
I am sorry if my question sounds too stupid/ignorant but I hope someone can help me: I am a higher rate taxpayer and I have been contributing to my company's personal pension plan for almost a year now and my understanding is that the pension manager claims basic rate relief and put that amount into my pension fund but I…

ISA vs AVC's
Just discovered this site and am very impressed with the content. I am hoping the more experienced members can offer general guidance on the issue of AVC vs. ISA’s. By way of background, I am 3 to 8 years from retirement (depending when I decide to jump) in a defined salary scheme (30 years service), mortgage paid, some…

NHS to teachers pension fund transfer
Hi Need to know how and where I can get some good advice on whether I should keep my NHS pension frozen having been made redundant this summer after 20 years of service, or transfer the value to the Teachers pension scheme, which I'm lead to believe is very similiar. I have to do this within the first 12 months of starting…

Choices and decisions about the future
Following discussions on the 'Care Home Fees - who pays?' thread (and thanks to the contributors, EdInvestor, Robert Sterling and Sharpie, I put the following to my DH: "Just to sum up a few issues at this point: 1.Anyone who is dealing with a relative who has to go into a nursing home and will require full-on…

Safer pension fund advice
I have been contributing to a legal and general stakeholder pension for the last 3 years. The funds are currently invested in a UK equity fund and have done very well over the last 3 years. I am worried I may lose these gains if there is a sudden or sustained fall in the FTSE. Just wondering is it worth bagging the profits…

Is there any way around paying tax on an inherited pension fund?
My brother and I are the joint executors of my deceased fathers estate. He has 2/3 of his company pension left which my brother and i are now entitled too. On reading through the documentation on how to claim the fund it seems as though we will be taxed on the annuity received as we are both in full time employment. Is…

Personal Pension with No Value - Why?
Back in 1997 I got my first proper job with a small company which entailed a pension. It was with Scottish Equitable and was made up of a personal pension that I contributed to and then a Group Pension that the Company paid into - all of this was arranged by a financial adviser who was brought in by the Company. I was only…

AVC's vs Mortgage Overpayaments vs ISA
I have read a couple of related threads, but didn't wish to hijack them, hence posting separately. I am a mid/late thirties man, single with no kids. I don't rule out settling down and doing the family thing one day though. I am a higher rate taxpayer, and I currently have in excess of £1k a month to 'invest' towards…

Standard Life: I can't withdraw Stakeholder Funds, is this right?
A year or so ago (before Standard Life floated on the Stock Market), I rang Standard Life and asked to withdraw my small Stakeholder Pension (less than £2,500) and close the account. I was told the company was about to go to flotation and that I would very likely come in for a windfall as a result. I therefore cancelled my…

State Pension and income tax
Now that poorer pensioners can claim pension credit to bring their income up to £114 a week this also brings them into the realms of having taxable income. I reckon the tax liability of a single pensioner aged between 60 and 65 is approx. £100 a year. Does the Inland Revenue claim this? I ask because they are absolutely…

He has now got a new job where there is an occupational pension scheme. He has joined this scheme as it looks quite good. The company contributes and he pays in a bit. What do we do about…

Personal Pension Dilemma
I took out a PP with Sun Life Financial of Canada in Feb 1998. I only paid into it for a just over a year. I joined a company pension scheme in August 1998. I informed the then Financial Advisor of SLFOC at the time but they and admittingly myself didn't cancel the direct debit and premiums carried on being taken out until…

ASP's ?????
I've just read an article on ASP's, apparently they are are used by plymouth brethren who object to buying an anuity on religious grounds, they allow you to leave the money invested whilst drawing down and any residue can be left as an inheritance, Surely this is no difference to drawdown, however if it is better why…

30 yr old hubby no pension - best approach?
Hi all - I'm posting on behalf of my hubby who was thirty this year and has no private pension. His employer doesn't have a pension scheme and at the age of 18 (at a different company) he was advised to opt out of SERPS which I believe is now S2P? I think he has a small fund with Allied Dunbar as a result of opting out of…

Fund mechanics questions - technical, long!
Hello, I am about to create myself a SIPP. When I first thought about this, I assumed I would be picking individual shares/etc myself, as I have some experience in doing so in a non-pension context. However, having seen what's available, I suspect that in reality most of the time I will be buying into funds of one kind or…
