Company takeover - personal details
The company I work for was bought over in the middle of 2017. To date all I have received is an email to inform me of the takeover and a 5 minute meeting to let me know that there will be no changes to my contract. Yesterday I received a ‘New Employee Form’ from the parent company. While I do understand that they might…

Gap in CV query
Im 62 and took early retirement 2.5 years ago but now find I'm not very good at it and want to regain employment, even if it's part time. I've done some volunteering this past 10 months but I'm not sure how to word the retirement gap in my CV. I don't think I've lost any skills or competencies but potential employers may…

I've been with my employer for 17 years now and done a number of roles for them (very large company). Approximately 4 years ago I was at risk of redundancy and i applied for a job…

Question about trade unions.
So I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks and after spending some time on this board the question of trade unions entered my mind. I've never been in one before and was wondering how exactly they work, what sort of benefits they have etc. If my workplace doesn't have a union rep, can I still join a union?

Should I sign up for Cont. JSA?
Hi. Just wondering whether it's worth signing up for contribution based JSA? I have enough NI contributions to cover it. I've been out of work for 2 months now. The thing is at the moment I would just rather sharpen up my skills and do some studying. At the moment my usual week day is being spent in the library learning…

Going paperless - but what tax stuff do I need to keep?
Hi all, My 2018 goal is to get the house in order and drowning in paper clutter needs to stop! I have decided to go paperless and although I am being ruthless with it, I do realise and accept that there are some things that need keeping - such as birth certificates etc. I have accumulated a lot of the following...of these…

confusion over probation period
Hi all I’ve been in my current job around 3 months and it hasn’t quite worked out as planned. Whilst I enjoy parts of it the role in real life is quite different to what was advertised and I’ve made the decision to cut my losses and move elsewhere. I have been offered a start date of February 5th. There is no mention on my…

Short-term role at Asda, should I have been taxed?
So, on my final shift the other night, I received my payslip for the first couple of weeks worth of shifts. On the payslip it has "Taxable pay" as £683.09, with the following deductions: N.I. A - £6.61 Income Tax - £136.60 Given I came into this role after a period of unemployment, this seems odd to me.

Can employer deduct holiday pay from final salary?
Hi Just looking for some advice. I’ve handed my notice in and I’m on a 3 month notice period, due to leave 4th April. My employer has said that I’ve taken too much holiday and some money will be deducted from my final pay cheque. (I’ve taken 10 days out of 15 days so far). Can they do this? I read somewhere that an…

Agency notice period - Forceable?
I suspect I know the answer but started a contract recently via a new agency who use an umbrella company. That's all new to me, needed the work so signed despite the notice period stating "1 month notice". Is that reasonable? States the person working for can end the contract whenever and so can the agency, so why do I…

Are circumstances surrounding a job more important than the job itself
It's that time of year where I'm getting numerous calls from recruitment agencies asking whether I'm looking to move jobs. I tell them all I'm open to moving if the right job opportunity comes along. They all ask me what I'd be looking for in my next role and I make up a load of nonsense when the honest answer is more…

At what point to get a sick note.
I had a car accident and I have a bad back. I was meant to start work on the tuesday(after the BH) but my back still wasn’t good. I went to the doctors Thursday and asked for a sick note. They said you have to come in 7 days. Does this mean tommorow(Monday) is the day I see doctor and get a sick note?

Civil service interview attire (female)
I'm a former teacher and have a couple of outfits I normally use for job interviews. They are sort of collared spotty/floral dresses that I pair with heels and a blazer. This civil service interview I've got coming up on Wednesday is making me feel I need a more formal outfit. Whilst my standard interview outfits look…

Redundancy insurance
My husband has unfortunately been made redundant. We do have redundancy insurance but worried that we won't meet the criteria. In the t&cs it says that no benefit will be payable of you accept voluntary redundancy, resign or retire He is being paid more than stat redundancy and has to sign a contract to state that he…

Scared of changing jobs
A little bit of background info, I have worked in admin/secretarial/reception for 25 years. I don't love it but neither do I hate it. I'm happy in the role as long as my day's are busy but im noticing more and more of these roles are disappearing as people use email more so tend to do more work themselves and as firms are…
