At work we have been paid 35p a mile for some time, And we recently discovered we could claim tax relief on the difference, 5p per mile. However on asking out HO for access to the last 6 years worth of expenses claims forms we have been refused without reason. So the question is basically, can they do this? Or how can we…

Paying back tax if I don't earn enough?
Hi, Had a letter from HMRC 6 months saying I owed them £450 from underpayment of tax in 2008. Due to their incompetence and several letters back and forth it's taken a long time for them to figure out how I'm going to pay it back! I argued my case a bit and said I could pay it back over 3 years. I've received a letter now…

Heavy Handed Revenue Compliance Unit
Just over 3 years ago I retired from the NHS. At that time I received a substantial sum for arrears of pay going back 10 years. Before receiving the money I contacted the Revenue saying that I thought it unfair should I be taxed at the high rate, as if it had been earnt in the one tax year, as most of the money was due…

Tax Refund Scam
Just be aware that you might get an email stating you are due a tax refund. In mine there was a 'get started' link which will probably ask for bank details. Now, it is not even the end of the tax year yet (ends on 5/4). The email is quite well written so be careful. HMRC will never send notification of refund by email…

P60 and wage slips don't match
When I started my employment 10 years ago I was full time. 2 years ago I was able to negotiate having an extra 20 days unpaid leave per year. My wage slips each month show the full time rate, then another rate with the 20 days unpaid deducted (pro rata). I only pay tax/NI on the reduced amount. My P60 is showing the full…
