Home Delivery Shopping - Asda v Tesco

Hello
Where I live, I only have the option of Asda or Tesco for home deliveries. I have mainly used Asda (can't beat their offers) but have had an issue with each and every order I have made mainly over the shelf life of products.

Is this a common complaint of Asda Home Delivery or am I just unlucky? Asda/Tesco claim that their staff pick your food as if they were shopping for themselves but certainly with Asda I doubt very much that this is the case.

Are there any home delivery shoppers out there and can they give the official verdict on this?

9 times and of 10 when I have done a home delivery shop, its been over £100 more like £200  so its difficult when it all turns up to find out if anything is wrong before the driver has disapeared.

  • I have had nearly out of date stuff with both of them, but I now always shop at Asda, because I prefer it and it's cheaper and also free delivery codes.

On one occasion I had liquid mushrooms:confused: now it was obvious that they where not fit for consumption and must have been obvious to the picker.

I just phone up and get a refund,I think it is something that I have to put up with (after being refunded of course :T ) because it is better that me going in store and getting a taxi home costing more.

Also I hate when products like bread or potatoes are OUT OF STOCK.

It is swings and roundabouts as one time I ordered Duck legs and recieved duck breast for the same price as the legs were out of stock:T .

You have to decide is it too much of a pain ,would I be better going in store.
For me I try to shop monthly and I live 8 miles away and don't drive,so I will continue with Asda online.

Hi Eric i think you'll find this is in the wrong section so it will likely get moved.

To answer your question though we've found exactly the same.

We have just started using Asda again in favour of Tesco and of the 3 times we've used them for home delivery, all but one was a bad experiance.

We shop for the week and produce dates are important to us. But we've found them appalling and some use by the dates being the same day as delivery.

The first time we had to phone and tell them we was not happy with dates on vegetables of only 1 or 2 days. We also had our delivery delayed till nearly 10pm due to a supposed van issue and a very grumpy and unresponsive driver turning up to make the experience even worse.

The week before last found us throwing away both a free range chicken AND chicken breasts that were in date but smelling seriously off. Of course we only knew this when we opened them to use :(

Last weeks shop was the worse and ended our relationship with Asda completely. We decided to stock fill the cupboards so ordered 96 items in total. As you say you have no chance of checking whats there so sign and check afterwards. Again the driver was late, we checked our replacements on the form (we had ordered 15 eggs bulk and they had to replace with 3 packs of 6 eggs instead) but when he had gone we found that the replacement items were not there at all, in fact, we had no eggs period :(

Further inspection showed that the 6 packs of part baked baguettes, and the 4 packs of kitkats were not there either :( And these were for the kids packed lunch for the day later.

Again produce dates on fresh meat and veg were not acceptable so on the phone we went.

They appear to use an Australian call centre and although the staff are friendly enough we felt our complaint wasn't being handled properly or seriously. We wanted to know if the store could send out the missing good that day and was passed from pillar to post. In fact we had to phone no less than 4 times before one of the service advisor's passed us, without telling us, straight through to our local store. They informed us all the drivers had gone home and nothing was coming out to us today.

We told the person on the other end of the phone that we wished to make a formal complaint and he said he'd get the delivery manager to phone us tomorrow. That phone call never arrived.

They are supposed to be reimbursing the money for the missing items and bad date produce but what got my goat was they stated it would take 7 to 10 working days to go through. Ironic really when you think they want payment upfront for their order. Even the poor girl at the call centre, who had to handled how ticked off I was, agreed that was unacceptable and that she too would have been a tad pee'd off. We work on a tight budget and having to wait for £22 returned to us (a 1/3 of our actual shop balance) for a period of 7 to 10 days has hit us hard.

To give you a balance however, and although tesco is dearer on many things, we have had little to no trouble with them on their home deliverys. We've used them off and on for months, found, on the whole, their drivers cheerful and willing to explain things, always prompt and on time and when we have had issue with dates on produce (not so often as Asda but it has happened on occassion) found their UK call centre quick, friendly and efficient.

I like Asda's prices but live in a location thats too far for us to get to their store. Now that we've have had 2 for 3 bad experiences in a row on their home delivery, produce that was bad and a local manager that obviously couldn't give two hoots about his customer, we've decided that it simply isn;t worth the hassle on the money saved to shop with them.

We'll be using tesco home delivery again from now on.

Thank you for your reply. I get confused with all the different boards - what board should this be posted on?

Your comments in your message ring very true with me also. Each time I had a delivery, I had to phone up about something and why oh why 7 to 10 days for the refund?

On my last shop, I actually phoned the local store as instructed by the driver who incidentally unpacked my shopping in the street before giving me £180 shopping in two trips! I had my front door open for over 5 mins while he was messing about in his van - he didn't say he was doing this so I was stood there like a lemon!!!

I think you actually fair worse if you phone the local store. Two of the items supplied in my last asda order were completely wrong - not substituted or anything just wrong so I didn't have the advantage of only paying the price of the item ordered no matter what was sent in its place and had to pay the extra.

The lady I spoke to at the Asda store was very friendly but the promised I will take some money off your shopping turned into I will give you £10 off you next shop as it was too late to do the refund when I spoke to her a few days later. This was despite the fact that I had been overcharged for The Times (£2.00 for a Saturday times instead of £1.40). As it was a new year home delivery shop, I had ordered lots and lots of fruit and veg in anticipation of a new year detox and most of this had very very short shelf life on it!

I even had a delivery once between 3pm and 5pm and had ordered 5 or 6 pizzas as had friends coming the following day and I think 4 out of the 6 pizzas had to be eaten that day?! Why do asda assume that if I am having a delivery so late that I want pizzas that need to be eaten that evening?

What really gets my goat is that despite their good prices and fantastic offers, they really dont seem to care about thier customers. :(
  • I've used both Asda and Tesco for the last few months but can say in all honesty that I prefer Asda. They are cheaper and we have never had any problems with the goods or produce they have delivered. In fact they are in some ways too kind!!!! We've had several occasions where they have delivered to us goods that we haven't actually even ordered let alone paid for!!! Pizza, Ready Brek breakfast cereal, Toilet Roll and the last delivery of a load of cigarettes and tobacco are the ones that spring mainly to mind!!! Nobody in our house smokes though so this is one product we didn't need!!! The delivery man always seems very bemused when we return the unwanted items to him the following week but you can't fault their service, though I expect the people who have found items that they have ordered are missing won't be too pleased!!!

    Agreed :(

The 7 to 10 working days is so they get some interest payments on their refund i believe. If they can do that to 1000's of customers they reimburse some of that refund back.

Although i hate Mr T's prices, i have to confess they are more customer aware than Asda. They really give better service over the phone i feel and at least my home delivery looks like some thought has gone into it.

Your mentioning the pizzas reminded me that last week we never got the 6 pizza dough packs we ordered too. We didn't pay for them but i recall how excited our kids were to make their own pizza and how upset they were when they were not there :(. I'll just make the dough now myself but they were disappointed.

If i lived near a local Asda store i would use them as a great deal of their smartprice range is tasty and very good value for money. They also offer far better deals than Tesco. But we need consistency and thought on our home delivery so will be using Tesco from now.

I was just going to say that your new found items are others losses :) but you beat me to it.

I guess we need to remember that it will be store specific on how we rate the experiance i guess. Your store might really care about their customers but our local Swansea one obviously doesn't :( Shame really as i'll miss their prices.

  • If your concerns are on things like short shelf life, out of stocks, missing items, and receiving other people's items, this is routed within the store your goods are picked. This means that Joe in Leeds could receive better quality from Asda, but John in York has a better shop with Tesco.
The promotions, delivery price, cost of products, efficiency of site etc come from HQ.
I would recommend always putting your complaints to the companies, if it's a late delivery, chicken that's gone off before it should have etc. The only way the service can improve within the stores is if it's reported to their HQ.
Hope this helps all the eager savers!
ps - i work for one of them but i wont be telling which!
pps - refunds actioned by stores take longer as they go from the store to be actioned by HQ then take the usual banking transfer time. As everyone knows, it takes a few days for money to get transfered from bank to bank, and this is unfortunately how refunds work.
  • Shop through mysupermarket and it will compare the prices for you. Tesco is often the cheaper for me. I don't think that the service is better from one or the other. Ocado is better as you rarely get things out b/c it tells you on the website if its out of stock.

However, I always figure that if its out of stock when delivered to me, it would be out when I went to the store.

Sometimes sell by dates can be poor, but I always get straight onto the phone if I have a problem, they are usually pretty good.

Always check your eggs and milk before the driver goes.

And sometimes substitutions can be weird. Like chicken for gammon?

I've never tried Adsa online but I'm usually happy with tesco, especially if i manage to get a load of extra points too. They always put substitutions in an inside out bag so I can check them quickly. I also do a quick check through the delivery list to make sure I'm happy with what's there. eg the selection boxes at £1, they'd gone up to £2 so I told the driver I didn't want them.

    hello
I used to be an avid asda fan-always shopped instore there for years. However their home delivery service where i live is UNBELIEVABLY bad. The last few orders i had had varying issues, one didnt turn up at all as they had insufficient drivers, the next one delivered the goods, put them in my kitchen, then decided they were someone elses delivery and that they didnt have mine, and took them away. On the third occasion, the frozen stuff was all soft, the forth was ok but 2 hours late, and the 5th time, i had a teatime slot, it didnt arrive , and then i had a phone call at 9pm saying they would be here past 11pm. I refused and asked for a refund, and it took 5 phone calls to get it!!!
as much as i love asda, i will NEVER use their home delivery again. Tesco is just okay and has a few glitches, such as no bags and short dated goods, but they usually turn up!
