edited 1 November 2016 at 7:07PM in It's gone, but was it any good?
On Thursday 3rd Nov Aldi will have a few Christmas things in store including a light up house https://www.aldi.co.uk/light-up-house-advent-calendar/p/073783090238702 it looks very cute from the pictures, and this is a great price for a wooden calendar. Long term these are money saving as they last for years and you can tailor them to the persons likes or allergy avoidance requirements (not sure if that's the right way to phrase it, hope you understand what I mean:o).

Official MoneySavingExpert insert Tue 1 Nov: This offer is no longer available online at Aldi, but will be in store (subject to availability) from Thu 3 Nov.
Big thanks to Violetta for the original spot!

I like this item, but it's storage capacity is small, so probably limited to sweets / small toys / note based gifts. I'll give it a thorough inspection on Thursday :D.

This looks nice. I bought something similar in Tesco a couple of years ago and it was very flimsy. The drawers hold a treat size chocolate or coin maximum.

They have 2 other styles online and from those pictures they don't look too flimsy obviously in real life may be another matter. We bought a wooden 1 from an independent shop 8 years ago and oh has this wee tradition at the end of November and fills it up with wee sweeties from a tub of celebrations , usually eats half the tub whilst he's at it too:santa2:

I almost forgot to post :o

There are 3 styles available, each with pros and cons.

White advent house - pretty enough, the boxes are larger than appear online (the depth makes the size roughly a cube), similar design to those sold at BHF, CRUK etc. Has LED light and is the "prettiest". However it is lightweight, the knobs I think are quite delicate and the colour means it's liable to be tainted by grubby fingers. On closer inspection the finish was slightly lacking, eg the scene on the roof wasn't particularly well assembled. Suitable IMO for adults / a Christmas mantelpiece.

Nutcracker - a larger piece in the shape of a toy soldier. The compartments are much bigger, and although it has knobs (I think?) it's not a delicate item and is more robust in every way. Suitable for a boy in general (my opinion).

Candy house - the same size as the white advent house, but much heavier and sturdier, and 3 of the 24 compartments are also bigger. Each compartment has a different Christmassy design; the smaller cube sized boxes can easily be opened by little fingers. Gender neutral, and definitely geared towards young children, this was the option I went for. I expect my niece to get at least 10 years use out of it!

Phew managed to get the last white 1 they only had the nutcracker one left he looked very festive and as you say vfm4meplse a bit more robust, but I can imagine might be knocked over a bit easier too.

Thank you for an excellent review of the items - I didn't need one but your review of the light up made my mind up not to bother going out searching for one. Cheers :)
