Hi everyone

I need some ideas for meals I can have cooking in the slow cooker whilst Im at work. Meals that my 5yr old and 12yr old will like.

Im not the greatest cook and everything i make in the SC comes out like a stew or is dried out if i reduce the liquid i add but because its on for a good 7rs it dries out.

Today i put on 8 seasoned chicken pieces with some stock, carrots, peas and put halved potatoes on top.
Came home (my son had turned it off as he usually does) after 8hrs on slow and it was full of greasy water and the potatoes had absorbed the flavour and colour. It didn't taste that great.

My kids love spag bol but i can't do that in the SC.
They like roast chicken, again that needs to go in the oven.
Cottage/Shepherds Pie, pizza...

I need ideas for kid friendly meals that i can chuck in the slow cooker and go to work.

My mum used to make the mince mixture for spag bol in the slow cooker and then just cook the spaghetti when she came home from work so it only took the time for the spaghetti to cook before we could eat.

    How about sausages or mince.
Brown in the frying pan and then place in slow cooker. Add any root veg diced = carrots, parsnips, potato, turnip. Add a tomato or bisto gravy sauce.
Serve in one of those plate size yorkshire puddings - buy frozen,

When I worked I use to cook enough food to eat Sunday and Monday. It saved on the cooking for Monday and family were just glad of a dinner never mind it being the same twice.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Sausage casserole - I put diced potatoes in mine so the whole meal is just ready to eat straight from the pot - also if your worried about it drying out have you tried using food / roasting bags in the slow cooker it saves washing too xx

Would they eat a cooked gammon joint? I often put one in to cook.

What about bbq pulled pork? I have a really simple recipe that I adapted, not having the gazillion ingrediants many recipes called for.

Lightly spray the slow cooker with oil (just in case the meat sticks), layer the bottom with sliced onions. Put pork in. Pour bbq sauce over the meat enough to cover but not submerge. When cooked take the meat out and 'pull' it with 2 forks. Put the pulled meat back into the slow cooker, it then mixes in with the juices from the onions. I turn setting to 'warm' at this point, whilst I prepare any accompaniments.

I remove all visible fat from the meat before I put it in which stops that greasy film on the top.

I just fling in boneless chicken thighs (trimmed of any fat) with any veg they like and an oxo cube. They have that as a chunky soup.

Then I do the same with lamb pieces, beef pieces, pork pieces etc. I sometimes put in tomato puree or tinned toms instead of water. Sometimes use herbs or paprika etc. It isn't very exciting but my children love it. I think they prefer simple flavours.

Hopefully others will add some ideas that I can steal too :)

Chicken pieces (with bones, or thigh fillets, whichever you prefer), chopped chorizo, chopped peppers, onions, kidney beans, garlic, paprika, passata or tinned toms and chicken stock to just cover. Serve with pasta, rice or cous
    Cous

Sorry I can't help with quantities, it's one of my weekly, staple, eyes close bung it in recipes. Often has random bits and pieces too, according to what needs using up :-)

Oh thank you all for the lovely replies..........

Roasting bags - never thought of that.

Mince - I thought it would need browning before going in the slow cooker? Thing is I don't have that much time in the morning. It has to be something I can at least prepare the night before.

Sausages - wouldn't they be too soft after 7 hrs in the SC?

  • I recently discovered that you can cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker and it works brilliantly. Just bung the chicken in - no need for water/stock or any other liquid. On low for 7+ hours. Ends up sitting in lots of chicken juices which make amazing chicken gravy. It doesn't brown like roast chicken but the meat just falls off the bones and can be used however you like.
