The government is looking into debt relief orders (DROs) and wants to hear from people who have had debts cancelled using one.
There are two ways to have your say before Thu 9 Oct.
1) Take the quick (and anonymous) survey
2) Respond to the full call for evidence by emailing DROandBankruptcyPetitionReview@insolvency.gsi.gov.uk
This covers a few more issues, such as:
Bankruptcy limits
The consultation is also looking at the limit set for bankruptcy and whether this should be increased. Currently your debts have to be over £750 before a creditor can petition the court for bankruptcy.
The government wants to know whether you think this is set at the correct level. Email it using the address above if you have a view.

This covers a few more issues, such as:
- Whether the existing limits for DROs are appropriate and if not what should the levels be set at. Some of the limits are:
- Assets have to be under £300
- Debt less than £15,000 and
- Spare income (after all bills and other expenditure) has to be less than £50 per month; - The design of the system including whether the system of approved intermediaries (e.g. Citizens Advice and StepChange) to help you apply for a DRO is working well
- Whether DROs have given you a fresh start and financial rehabilitation

After all this info is reviewed, is there any chance of any changes? Maybe the level will be raised to £20K? That would help many go for a DRO instead of big deal bankruptcy0

And I've always wondered about the £50 spare income, you could have £14800 of debt spread across 30 creditors (Avg. £493, so almost £500).
What would you be expected to do with this £50 or so? You could be in a position of each creditor getting a couple of £'s each but then you could be repaying your debts over 25 years! Just doesn't seem right here so what am I missing?
Shouldn't the number of creditors be taken into account too? 10 or less then fine as that could be £5 pcm but maybe allow £5 increments for each creditor with an annual review or something? Or is that going to be cost ineffective?
