Hey guys

Some of you know my story but for those who don't I live offshore and about 5 years ago was engaged to be married. Then found out my fianc! had been having an affair for months and he kicked me out the house and I had to start again

Made my own friends, climbed the greasy pole and got to top of my game career wise.

However been unhappy in my job and also on this rock for a while. Been toying with coming back to uk and a career change

Have still not decided in the career change part but I now think that moving back to uk is right thing. I'm scared about starting again at age 35 and when I have such great mates but am never going to meet anyone over here and am just bored!

So, reason I'm posting is am thinking of living outside of London but in commuting distance. What do people think about sevenoaks or guildford? Any other suggestions of nice and safe places to live but also things going on so I can make some friends?

I don't know Sevenoaks but Guildford is lovely although expensive. If you go further south prices are cheaper. Places like Haslemere, Liphook and Peterfield are still reasonable commuting difference. Still fairly expensive but nice!

What sort of thing are you looking for? Pubs? Country? Nightlife?

We looked at some houses in Liphook. There seems to be lots going on there in terms of clubs and societies, including a writers group.

I was born and bred in Liphook. It is lovely but not really what I'd call lively! A few nice bars, lovely golf course, two actually, it's about an hours train journey from London.

Haslemere is a bit closer and slightly livlier. What about Godalming or more towards Dorking?

At 35, with no partner, I think I'd live IN London to be honest.
Huge social scene, loads of culture, much more chance of meeting Mr (or Mrs) right and setting up your life. If that's what you want.....

I lived in london for 2 years and absolutely loved it. So much to see and do, so many friends nearby. If money is not a limiting factor it's an absolute blast. At the end of that time I was glad to get out though, and we got a lovely home in commuting distance from London. (not going to say where, it's not somewhere I'd particularly recommend though we like it, it's just that my Fiancee got a job out there).

Then a couple of years down the line you can decide where you want to buy and who with.

    Oh: debt free wannabe?

Thanks guys. I was wondering whether to live back in London. I have a flat in tooting but I didn't particularly like the area so wasn't keen on living back there

At the minute I'm toying with joining a graduate scheme and if I do, then the likelihood is the only place ill be able to afford to live is back in that flat, and even then that's only if I change my repayments to interest only (which would only do for a couple of years) but if I stay in my current profession I'd be able to live in sevenoaks or similar

It's so hard trying to work out what to do!
