Trading Card Gamers, how do you cut your costs?

Calling all card gamers.

Being an MTG player, I know that it can rack up as a pretty expensive hobby. I thought it would be a good idea if we all pool together our cost cutting ideas. I always use magic madhouse as an estimator, and will only buy anything if it's cheaper than on there. Of course there's always mate's rates at FNM, but most of the time they wont have that specific card you need that you can't fork out £40 for.

Do you keep the rares that you don't use, or sell them on to people who need them in a deck? Let's put our heads together and find out if we can save a bit of money with or without bribery

I'm just returning to the hobby (MTG too) after not playing for 10+ years (7th edition was when I was last serious about it).

To start with I'm focusing on the pre-built decks to keep costs low, especially the new tournament decks that come with a sideboard.

Always tempting to suppliment with a few singles or try my luck with some boosters....

That would be a good question to have the answers too actually - If I'm looking for Common / Uncommon / Rare / Mythic Rare, should I go for singles or for boosters?

I started playing this about 25 years ago and stopped about 8 years ago when it was just getting too expensive. My friends and I sometimes just play Type 1 decks as we find them more fun and fast going. I suppose some might say we are stuck in our ways I guess.

We used to buy cards from the States and sell them at card fares. Not really sure if we ever made that much money TBH but most of the profits would have been spent on other cards for ourselves.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG; also known as Magic) is the first trading card game and was created by Richard Garfield and introduced in 1993 It's 20 years old in august. the years go fast though.

I stopped playing just before RAv first rolled around, and then thanks to friends started again in M12, decided it was too expensive to build a deck from scratch so bought a coreset, been swapping it out with singles since. It SEEMS to be the cheepest. Though I have very generous friends who always let each other use cards, and do lots of good 'mates rates' when they pull something nice.

    ______________

DF has a 'rares book' where he keeps everything worth keeping that he's pulled in colour order, he goes to a lot of events and so is constantly getting cards he doesn't use in decks that are wanted and useful, and worth £1 - £25 takes it to FNM and other meetings charges a little less than magic madhouse, seems to pay all of the events he goes to.

Not played since the Urza series. Why? Moved house (100+ miles)and didn't find people to play with and for me it got to the point you had to pay out for each expansion just to keep up.

Sold the lot along with my Netrunner stuff a few years ago, Netrunner was more interesting due to the two vastly different sides of runner and corporation

I always wanted to give Netrunner a go! It sounds like it would play really well and smooth. Yep it feels like that to me as well. Everytime it rolls around, like I have to get more cards. Twice now i've decided i'm not going to have a standard deck. I'm only playing for fun now with friends, I don't even fancy any FNM unless it's run by the local uni's gaming society, as they're more flexible on the formats they let people run and allow proxies.

    Debt-free and Proud! Mortgage-free Glee!
Gave up after Ravnica and have just sold 4 x Umezawa's Jitte on eBay for quite a bit less than I paid for them.

I was happy enough playing with pre-built decks and then I started going to FNM with my teenage son and things went a bit bonkers. Trying to build winning decks is always going to be ruinously expensive.

Don't get me started on bloody Warhammer 40k !!!
