Renting with pets

How hard is it to rent a property when you have pets? I have 2 house dogs, they are both small and house trained. We're selling our house and might have to rent for a while in between til we find a house we want to buy. I'm just thinking ahead in case we find a buyer before we find a new home.

  • Personally speaking I rent out a house to a family with 1 dog and 2 cats. Only reason I entertained this, is they are planning on staying long term. I don't think I'd have been as happy to do so if it was only short term (i.e. 6 months ~ 1 year) Also whole downstairs is laminate and tiles so not a lot of carpet cleaning required if there is an accident!!

It really does depend on the landlord, I would have thought. My landlord is perfectly happy for us to have our cat, but then the cat (aside from the odd hairball!) is pretty tidy, maybe more so than a dog. But then I guess that's all in the training.

I digress, personally I found it no problem. The rental listing for the property actually stated no pets, but this was perhaps placed there by the letting agent as the landlord was happy enough when asked (before we signed any contracts)

Like anything, you never know until you ask.

I've always specified 'no pets', however I have a lady with 2 rabbits (in the garden), a family with 2 dogs, and 2 families with no pets.

I'd want to meet the animals before making a decision, and the agency that 3 of ours are let through are both aware of this and happy with it.

We usually take a months deposit, and with the dogs, we have taken 2 months, with an additional onus on the tenants to ensure the property is left clean. Tenants are happy, I'm happy I've got the additional security should they not. This was a family in your situation, who wanted the property initially for 6 months, and have been with us for 3 years now.

Thanks all. One of the dogs is 12 years and the other is 9 months.

You'll probably have more problems getting a short term rental than a pet friendly one - we rent out our house but will take a minimum of 6 months but happy to have pets - within reason.
