Which methods can I use to pay tax due?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, couldn't find the answer when I searched.
Up until now I've been quite stubborn in wanting to file my tax return on paper. This year the tax office didn't send me a return through the post, but sent a letter trying to get me to file online.
I've had a look at their demo today, I'm still in two minds, but may move to online. What I'd really like to know is regarding me making my payments. At the moment they send me a bill before payment's due in July and January, and I pay it at my local bank.
If I file online, does the whole thing become online? Would I get the payment requests by email instead? And would I be expected to pay online, or would I still have an option to go to my bank?
I only use one credit card online, to reduce my financial exposure, and don't want to be putting my bank details on there.
How do you all pay?

You get payment options with your postal statement: HMRC do not seem to use email.
I recommend doing as much as possible online: you can set up a direct transfer via BACS.
HMRC would like to see everyone do everything online, which is hard for people without internet access. However, filing and paying online is much simpler than using the post.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

I think PC's signature refers to filing on-line and on paper.
Why would anyone pay all that postage when it can be done on-line
and it even helps you not to make errors. If you have any problems just come back and ask.
Do record your username and password it takes days to have them re-issued and come January 29 that's not what you want.
Just do it it really is easy and you can pay by your preferred method. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Thank you both,
having looked at the demo, I'm not worried about filing online (although it still annoys me that HMRC are now making it more difficult to do anything else...not sending out a paper return, making me phone if I want one, then wait several weeks for it to arrive...)
My stumbling block was finding out if I could still pay at the bank...knowing that I'll get a postal statement with payment options helps, thanks.

Believe me, once you have filed online, you will never want to go back to postal submission! You can actually download and print the form though.
You can also get the latest payment options at:

I believe you!
I won't print the form, no working printer. Now that you have reassured me that I can still pay in the high street if I want, I'm going to register online.
You may have gathered I'm a bit of a dinosaur
...I love pen and paper...also maps, no satnav in this house!
Although, having given this a bit more thought, now that the personal allowance has been increased, it's very possible I won't be paying any tax this year, I'll be below the limit. Still, I'll need to know for future years, won't I?

I'm not sure you'd ever need to have a satnav in the house unless you live in a mobile home
:rotfl:told you I was a dinosaur! My Dad keeps his satnav in the house, it only goes out on special occasions :rotfl:
