Hi - All.

I am an artist part time and sell art work.

I have found a good way of doing this is online. The trouble is the majority of the web sites that sell my work take a large percentage (45 -50% of commission)

Has any one got any advice on this or how I could maybe reduce the comminsion rate?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Unless you can negotiate with the sites, the only way you're going to increase your take is to increase your involvement in selling, which means following all the usual business advice in this regard. That means either you do it yourself, or you team up with someone who'll do it for your either for free or for a smaller cut. Basically you're looking to build up your personal visibility which means building a website, blogging, using Facebook etc, all of which takes time, rather than piggybacking on an established site. If you want to go down this route, I'd suggest you buy a book like Marketing for Dummies and absorb its advice.

How about promoting your work through a facebook page?
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • There are sites like Folksy and Etsy that charge a lot less commission than that but they're typically more crafts than arts.

The alternative of cause is to set up and promote your own site but then you may find the cost of PPC and other marketing exceeds the other sites commission rate

    Thanks all,

    Very Helpful.

Has anyone got any other sites they could recommend?!

An enterprising art student went door-to-door and I bought a couple of his small pieces. Although I suspect it wasn't a very good return, for the hours it took him to do and sell?
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.
  • Art galleries are likely to also take this kind of % - some of the bigger ones will take over 50%. The advantage of a gallery is that customers can see the actual artwork in real life, which can be an advantage over internet-based sales - but of course, you can't reach as many customers. Instead of reducing the commission rate, have you thought about increasing your prices?

i second etsy, it's awesome and the more you talk in the forums and join and network the more people visit your store. I sell handmade jewellery on there and have done commissions for quite a few people now.

It is a little more crafty than artsy but I have brought art prints from there before
