irstly let me apologise if this is a re-post of if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I received a letter dated the 11 June 2012 from Mortimer Clarke Solicitors, stating ‘Special Settlement 25% Reduction on your balance’ stating that their client (Yorkshire Bank) had selected me to receive a substantial discount on the amount I owe.

Bearing in mind I haven’t had any previous correspondence I put this down to a ‘spam’ letter and didn’t think much of it.

Yesterday I received another letter dated 25 June 2012 from the same solicitors telling me that their client obtained a judgement against me in 2007 and recent investigations reveal that I am now employed and go on to state that an attachment of earnings could be issued.

Neither of these letters gives any history of how much money is owned.

I think there is something outstanding but to be brutally honest I left this with my husband (now ex). I did telephone the bank to let them know that we were separating and the joint account was closed and until now I have not heard anything. It is only recently that I have changed my telephone number so up until recently they have been able to contact me.

I’m living with my partner with 2 children (8 and 12) in rented accommodation and I’m the only one with earnings. My partner has just applied for Job seekers allowance.

I’m rather concerned. I’m struggling as it is and not sure what to do about these letters. Do I ring them, write to them.

I’m seeking any help or information on this.

Thank you

Write to them, sending a 'prove it' letter. Use the forum search for the text - Fermi has a great one.

Don't do anything by phone. Do everything in writing and don't allow them to do things by phone either. It is up to them to prove you owe this debt, not up to you to prove you don't. However, if you had a joint debt with your ex and he stopped paying, then you are liable, so be prepared for the worst!

Then again, it might just be a fishing scam - have you checked your credit file to see if there is a CCJ on there? If there is, and this isn't your debt, you will need to get that removed too.

    Best of luck
