Best way to deal with sick on a carpet - at the time of impact

Options
Ok, a bit of a grim topic I realise.

After the DD (nearly 1) threw up for the first time (properly) this morning, I'm starting to worry about our new carpets!

I've already read threads on here about dealing with sick, days or weeks after the event (once the carpet is stained).

Being as prevention is better than the cure, what's the best way to deal with/cleanup sick as soon as it is on the carpet?

Mop up revolting mess with tea towels whilst not being sick yourself....
Chuck them in washing machine, then go back to murky mess with clean damp tea towel and get the worst off. Leave to dry, put all the cloths on to rinse, then wash. Sprinkle lots of baking soda (bicarb) onto the stain, then brush in lightly and hoover off. Unless you've got a dark carpet cos it might bring the colour out a bit. ;)
This generally works for me, and it takes the smell out efficiently. I have two small pukers in my house, and two cats that take turns to yak up revolting messes. And it does not smell of sick anywhere. I'm sure someone else will be along soon with more ideas, in the meantime, hope the baby feels better soon-keep a bowl and towel handy!

Trying using a face cloth with water and bio laundry soap (should be ringed out, not overly wet) this should break down any further germs and smells in the carpet and leave the room smelling lovely

(However, Dont use the bio soap on wool carpets, there is a powered version from v**ish that does exactly the same thing)

Sometimes you can pick this up at the £ store

I have survived 4 children and multiple pets with this method.

    Good Luck

My carpets been through the mill with my two little ones, and a dog. I'm going to hire a professional carpet cleaner again shortly. Came up like new last time.

I usually mop with a towel straight away, and use some thing like vanish carpet spray or something which helps, but after a while find a proper clean beneficial. Its only approx £22 to hire from my local hardware store. They even drop it off, and pick up for me.

the good old fashioned way - a dustpan, and you can either use the brush, or a scraper of some kind to scoop the sick into the pan and then dispose of it down the loo! You will be surprised just how much you can get out of the carpet like this!
Then a drop of stardrops in warm water and a sponge and just clean the residue up!
any lingering smell can be dealt with when its dry by shaking bicarb over - leaving as long as poss and hoovering up.

I found this out when the kids had whooping cough and were constantly sick for weeks!

Horrid thought, but we tend to use the palette (sp?) knife for scraping everything into a dustpan, then go with washing up liquid in warm water and umpteen teatowels and dishcloths. Blot as dry as possible with yet more towels, and wipe the pallette knife & dustpan. Then put the kettle on. Put all the vile cloths in machine on a boil wash. Then use boiling water to scald knife and dustpan, and then stick in dishwasher. The name calming cuppa with remaining boiling water.

Thanks for the replies everyone. :)

Fortunately the vomiting stopped shortly after posting this, though I've read and digested (eek) all of the above in preparation for when it next happens!

If you sprinkle cheap bran (from the health store) onto the sick it absorbs most of the liquid content and you can then scrape up. I think sand would do the same.

Clean with white vinegar solution which will get rid of the smell. I would then use my bissell carpet cleaner to finish off.

I usually scoop the 'BITS' up and dispose of them, then I get a little bucket with soapy water an old cloth and my trusty white stardrops, i put a few drops of the white 'Stardrops' on the wet cloth, rub it all over the affected area, rinse cloth and rub over area again with soapy cloth, then use old towel to rub off the excess water. smell nice and fresh and carpet comes up trumps.
