I found this website a long time ago and it's fantastic! They have a large list of free games and they have their own rules which is good:
1) The game must be 100% free, legal and in no need of a purchase
2) The game must not force a user to install any software except for the game itself.
3) The games must be easy to run, off of the first install.
and some of these were at one time proper full games (as in charged at full price such as area 51) So it's definitely worth a look!

Midway now freely offers the PC edition of The Suffering, Surreal Software's survival/horror game set in a penitentiary that is currently being adapted into a feature film. The free version of the [M]ature-rated game is supported by advertising, and a 1.3 GB download.
