Think we are both reassessing our priorities as a result. On the one hand we did some mortgage overpayment calculations and realised if we made the max OPs allowed every month, our mortgage would be paid off in 10 years  I.e. Mortgage free at 37 and 44!
Then my partner started talking about moving to a bigger place with 3 bedrooms however for when we have a baby :rotfl: Ahhhh. Basically I don't think we know what we want!
Haha, you should just like me and DH. One minute we want to be mortgage free, the next a bigger house (and mortgage seems a good idea). I'm doing a regular overpayment of £30 a month, not much but DH is a student at the moment so we are on a reduced income, and then separate my savings in to mortgage overpayment and actual savings, then pay the mortgage overpayment savings off the mortgage if we decide to stay put (in 6 months), or use it to increase the deposit on the new property. I think I can have at least £2k to pay off at the end of that 6 months, hopefully more like £3k.0 -
Hi Velocity, you have already been on my diary and seen what happened to our plans to be mortgage free - but i still echo the overpaying method, we really would not have been where we are now without it. just wish we had started when we were your age.
My gran used to say "Man plans and God laughs" Life is meant to get in the way of our plans. Just don't buy any VW campervans!0 -

Hi velocity, great read so far and you can really tell the enthusiasm (and weekly turmoil) starting your journey!
I spent 45mins on the phone to HSBC on Friday trying to organise the same accounts (I was going for joint current and and ISA each). I couldn't believe the interrogation when Halifax rewards x3, TSB x 2 and nationwide were all quick and 21st century online!
I was amazed at how it felt uncomfortable talking about finances, especially after our recent remortgage when I did it all myself online!!
I'm sure it'll be worth it though and the bonus interest is just free money to attack our banks with for overpayments!MFW: Was: £136,000.......Now: £61,892.24......
