Resign or let them finish me?

Options
Ive been off sick for over 2 months and according to the doctor Im not going to be going back to work for quite some time.

Work are ok at the moment but they are very strict on absence and I know I will get called in for a meeting soon.

Im actually a couple of years past retirement age and Im seriously considering not going back at all as my health is not great.

I spoke to someone about it yesterday just in conversation and they said 'Dont resign, let them finish you'. But I cant see what difference it would make as Im not going to be signing on or looking for another job and I get my pension now.

Is there any practical reason Im not thinking of in waiting for them to finish me rather than me just handing in my notice?

Normally we would advise waiting to be terminated by the employer as that would make it easier to claim JSA, but in your situation that's not a consideration so if you feel better about resigning then I can't see any reason not to do that.

You could go out fighting but if you're already poorly you don't want to make yourself worse.

Resign and enjoy retirement as best as you can, make sure you get the correct holiday pay in your final payslip.

    Good luck.

I wasn't happy in my last job after a change of management. I thought about resigning but waited until they terminated me and paid me off via a settlement agreement.

Are you getting SSP or any other sick pay? That would make it worth staying until it runs out at least.
And you are still acrueing holidays that you could eventually take as pay.
I'd hold out if I was you.

Have a word with the firm- as above, if past retirement age and not feeling up to it, best to call it a day.

    Yes, I agree.

Plus the OP may be entitled to be paid in full for their notice despite only getting SSP.

There need not be any "fight" involved, just respond slowly to any correspondence from the firm and let things take their course.

I wouldn't think you could claim ssp if over retirement age.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Maybe not but the OP is still accruing holiday all the time he remains employed (roughly one day per two weeks) and may be maintaining his entitlement to full pay during his notice period if the firm dismiss him.
