DAS scheme scotland help

Options
I have been in touch and working with stepchange. They have advised me to do the DAS scheme in Scotland. I have 42k of unsecured debts on credit cards that i cant pay as now seperated. The figure quoted from my ecpenses is £209 per month for 16 years. Is that likely to be accepted on the DAS scheme? Also what do i send to my creditors in the meantime?

    Hi,

We cannot really speculate what your creditors will or will not do, your best poseing your questions to StepChange, although 16 years seems stupidly long to me.

Any reason you did not consider bankruptcy ?

Mainly because the house has 9 year lowish mortgage left and to protect that.

Usually creditors are fine with your proposals, if you have any concerns, speak to the creditors themselves, you may be surprised how helpful they can be at times.

The DAS criteria state that you must be capable of repaying your debts over a "reasonable" period. This isn't strictly defined in law, but the figures you've quoted would suggest you could argue you fit into that bracket. Stepchange are likely to have suggested DAS as it won't implicate your home in the way that some formal options would. Also bear in mind that when your mortgage ends that will free up extra disposable income to then throw at your debts, though obviously that is a good way off.

At this stage, you wouldn't need to give your creditors any specific notice that you are planning on doing a DAS. If Stepchange offer to act as your approved money adviser and help set it up, your details would be added to the "DAS Register" - this gives you initial protection against any creditor action to enforce their debt for six weeks.

You can learn more at https://www.nationaldebtline.org/S/factsheets/Pages/debt-arrangement-scheme/das.aspx and no doubt Stepchange will have their own guides to DAS as well.

    Best wishes
