    I've just checked Abbey's website and there's absolutely nothing about this offer there. Are you sure you're not getting confused with the Cahoot offer (Cahoot are owned by Abbey) ??

    They are actually a division of (i.e. part of) Abbey. Same as Halifax/IF/Birmingham Midshires.

    It means that they only need one banking licence and costs them less to run.

    Oops, bit off topic:

    Well for starters the cover issue is only if you save with the bank and for finishers I can't believe that any government wouldn't step in (over and above their requirements) to maintain consumer confidence in the banking system...
