Paying tax for UK earnings whilst in Canada

this may sound strange and possibly out of the forum remit but my son is over in Canada working on a 2 year visa; he has been asked to fill out a Tax Return. On the form it asked if he has earned any monies elsewhere in 2017 (obviously he did up until he went to Canada) He has put his earning from the UK company down as well as his Canadian wages (which are below their taxable threshold) He was expecting to get a large rebate as he has been paying tax on his earning but now, he has recieved an email saying he now owes $1700 as they have taken his UK earnings into account but he has already paid UK tax on those. Any advice info greatly appreciated. I have asked friends in Canada if this is true and they have not heard of this.:eek::eek::eek:

    Please clarify - are the authorities in Canada including his UK earnings for tax calculation or are the UK authorities trying to include his Canadian earnings in their calculations.

    Basically my son applied for his Tax Rebate from his Canadian paid work, (he's been there working from the end of July 2017). The company that he went through asked if he'd earned any other money in that tax year, so he put down his previous English employer wages to his end date in June. So it's the Canadian company that is dealing with his claim have asked.

    If he is out of the UK for more than 6 months in any tax year he should be able to reclaim his UK tax. So the Canadians are probably right that he should be paying tax in Canada rather than the UK.

    that is not in dispute but the company dealing with his Tax Rebate are trying to claim tax on what he has already paid in the UK. They are adding his Uk earnings (prior to him leaving UK) to his Canadian earnings
