2014 Council Tax demand

Options
I have received a bill for council tax for 2014 for my parents house. Are they still able to ask for this? It is for a reasonably small amount but we thought it was all paid up to date as per bills sent at that time. Can they come back for more three years later? Will this keep happening?? I thought this chapter in my life was closed and feel so upset it's come back to haunt me! We sold the house in 2014! Thank you

There is a limit of 6 years for an outstanding debt, but as this a tax, it is not classed as a normal debt and 6 year limit does not apply. So yes they can chase for a 2014 underpayment.

You need to be very clear as to what period the bill is for, and who was the occupier at that time - your parents or the executors of their estate.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

A Local Authority can issue a revised demand notice at any time if an adjusted/new charge becomes due - this can be because they've revised a discount or exemption etc. Once a demand notice in issued this way they have 6 years to obtain a liability order, if needed.

If it is simply a duplicate of the original demand notice then the local authority would have 6 years from when the demand notice was originally issued to enforce the charge by way of a liability order, if needed.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
