Hi, my 8 year old son realised today that he has no money left in his money box. I said that if he wants more money he has to earn it like we do. He was excitedly thinking up ideas to make money and has to decided to set up a vegetable cart with his grandads spare veggies that he grows. His idea is that he fills his little hand pulled wagon and sells the veggies to neighbours etc. I have looked at child labour laws and it states that children cannot work for an employer until age 13. He will be working for himself so is this ok to do or are we going to get into trouble? I've searched the Internet and cannot find any answers and obviously want to stay on the right aide of the law. I expect this will be a five minute idea but I want to encourage this positive idea and think it will be a great learning opportunity for him.

Awwww that's so cute. You should encourage him - though maybe stick to neighbour you know.

Can't you pay him for doing household chores?

    I've been Money Tipped!
My 15 year old Daughter got a magazine round a couple of years ago which I help her with, (monthly). A second round came up which my Wife and 12 year old son now cover. My youngest Son, (aged 8), helps with the 2nd round and gets £20 a month for it, (elder son gets £30). He loves doing it and saves the money for something big, (last purchase was a Nintendo 3DS).

Why not see if there's a round you can apply for but your Son helps you with so can earn some money monthly?

Yes he has only sold to people he knows and so far everyone has been very positive and encouraging. It's great that he has been outside all weekend keeping busy and having fun and earning a small amount of pocket money. He has been offered an odd job of taking a few bottles up to the bottle bank in his little pull along truck. Thank you for the positive advice. No obviously he doesn't have food hygiene certificate but he isn't actually preparing the food. I would be more concerned eating the cakes at school fetes where none of the parents and children who have made the cakes has food hygiene certs or have their kitchens inspected. I guess it's a grey area?

I just want to say that this is fantastic, and you won't realise it, but it will instill something in him for life!

When I was about this age, growing up in South Africa, my parents had a farm stall that meant I spent a lot of time at wholesalers with them. One day my Mum gave me some money and told me to set up my own little "tuck shop". I learned so much about stock control, selling for profits, keeping money aside to buy new stock, etc. And now that I'm 25 I've got a very entrepreneurial streak! I am always looking at ways to earn extra money - I've been the first person on eBay selling jewellery making kits (you wouldn't think it to look on eBay now) and I've got a keen eye for picking up bargains at bootsales to sell on for profit. I'm not exactly rich but I do think I have a really good work ethic!

Thank you emmaglet, yes I'm determined for my children to realise that if you want something you have to earn it. From an early age whenever they have asked for something I say "yes as long as you pay for it". It really makes them think twice and has stopped the nagging around the supermarkets. Obviously I do buy them occasional treats but never if they have whined or nagged for it. Myself and my husband got into a bit of debt when we were younger (kept putting things on the credit card). We have learnt the hard way and now openly discuss money with our children in the hope that they will learn from our mistake.

Why not give him some of the tax credits and child benefit you get for him towards his pocket money.

    cool:T:T:T

Encourage him all the way, as I bet you he is learning, without realising it... PLUS he is not stuck in the house playing games on the consoles...

The only thing I would be worried about, is he helping grandad, grow the veggies? AND when will grandad start asking for his cut:rotfl:
