If you have not yet filed, consider this. Under HMRC's new system due to come into effect in 2 tax years' time - called Making Tax Digital (MTD) - you would now have clocked up well over £1,000 in fines for late submission.

That's because the due date for the first return of 2015-16 under MTD was 31 July 2015. So you are already nearly 18 months late I am afraid.

I am really dreading this. I do the books for a friend and don't use software which I believe I will have to because I won't be able to file the way I file SA now. I know he won't pay for the software and, as I do it as a favour, I certainly won't be paying.

HMRC have come up with some stupid stuff, this is the stupidest in last 6 years which is really saying something! Worse than pasty taxes!

Is anyone having problems with the Self Assessment website right now? I logged in to the site yesterday and clicked on Self Assessment and the page said "There's a problem. Sorry, we're experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later."

I tried logging in today, three times, and I get to the point where it asks me to enter the six-digit access code supposedly sent to my mobile but the site never sends it. I'm just wondering if the HMRC web servers are cracking under the pressure of a sudden spike in usage.

It's quite common at this time of year, if you avoid peak periods it is usually better. But don't worry per HMRC under MTD their servers can easily cope with 4 times this volume.
