Help with SOA

Hi all,

Please help me to get my credit card debt's paid off and budget for the future effectively. I have been lurking and occasionly posting and now only feel brave enough to post. I have adopted some of the advice from other posts but really need to get to grips with things.

I am a single parent working part time with 2 small children under 5. One of them has a disability. I receive DLA and have a car through this scheme for her. I do not have to pay any car costs apart from petrol.

I found it difficult to accurately record how much I spend on presents, days out, haircuts and the like-clearly this is where my spare money has been going. The figures below are approximates divided by 12.

I would like to be able to budget each month going forward and accurately. Please help!

Thank you in advance

Hi, I'm sure others will be along that will have better knowledge than me, but this is what I've noticed from looking at your soa:

£200 per month on clothing is a lot. I know children grow quickly (mine definitely does), but I'm thinking you could cut back easily on that.

Mobile phone - £50. Are you tied into a contract? That could easily be cut in half, if not further.

Your entertainment is 0. I'm sure you would spend something here on days out, lunch out, etc.

Emergency fund - you need something here each month.

Contents insurance - does that include building insurance? You could probably save here.

£200 on groceries is not bad at all, but with only 1 adult and 2 children, could you cut back a little, even to scrape £10 or £20 off?

Do you have £361 left each month? If not you need to work out where it goes, if you do then that could be thrown at the debts which would get them paid off within 10 months.

    I hope this helps x

If I were you, I'd have a couple of lean months, and pay off the MBNA Card double quick.

I know £696 isn't a huge balance but, at £25 per month, it's going to take 2.5 years to clear it.

If you got shut of it now, and put the £25 toward the (I presume) Barclaycard, you would have that one cleared in around 33 months, instead of the current 45 months.

Surely it's worth a couple of lean months, to bring your DFD forward by a year?

Thank you both for your replies-they are very helpful.

No there is no real reason why clothing is so high, i've been careless and greedy. I have had to buy ballet and rainbows outfits but not anything near the amount I have been. Champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget clearly!

My phone is in contract until May-it was 24 months :0(

    Bedsit Bob-

I live in Wales so I have free prescriptions. I am unsure about the buildings I must check my paperwork.

I will definately have a few lean months now to concentrate on the Mbna card, thank you.

    :-)

Yes a few things pop out.

Clothes definitely - kids don't user that much and mine often had hand me downs or nice charity shop stuff - it doesn't mean its rubbish.

    Sat TV - not necessary.

House insurance - go to a comparison site and get it much cheaper - plus often with contents combined - ours for a 3 bedroom is under £9 a month for both.

Haircuts - what are you doing? Kids just need a dry trim every few months and you could be the same.

Food - if you did an online shop with Tesco you would know what the total was and also not buying extras.
