Great 'Bit on the side... revisited' Hunt
No, not THAT - we mean your income. In 2006, we tapped MoneySavers for legal ways to make a bit of extra cash (eg, eBay, second jobs, etc). So much has changed since then, we want to find out how you top up your income now.

Do you mean extra cash gained legally and declared for taxes, or just extra cash?

If you've got a skill such as web design, programming, graphic design (or anything you can think of that may be of use to others) then the freelance sites are a great way to earn extra.

There are various sites, such as freelancer.com, guru.com and elance.com for larger jobs and also sites such as fiverr and peopleperhour for micro jobs.

It is quite competitive and there are lots of freelancers from third-world countries who are willing to work for a pittance, but if you can build up a reputation then you can make quite good money from it.
  • I do lots of little bits for extra cash, and because I enjoy it. I umpire lacrosse matches, go beating, sell pieces on ebay, use cashback cards and websites, stooze. I don't 'work' in the 9-5 conventional way but everything goes through the tax system (someone has to pay them).
My main job is looking after my children and husband, second is baking wedding cakes, third is a marquee erection business, I luckily have the opportunity to rent out my house whilst my husband gets a house with the job, so no rent to worry about.

Can I just say thank you to Martin's Spreadsheet designer :A - you have transformed my world! I went from receiving the emails and thinking I can't do any of this I just don't have the spare cash, to having money saved for the big annual payments like insurance, car tax, council tax and oil in less than a couple of months. I've been filling it in now for 10 months and telling all my friends about it (and possibly boring my children to tears)
  • We rent out our spare room on a Monday - Friday basis which goes 100% on overpaying our mortgage... Whilst rates are so low, we want to take advantage.

spareroom.co.uk has loads of advice on how and tax implications of it.

Erm, web design, programming, graphic design, freelance writing and proof reading are all skilled jobs that not just anyone can do, so hardly a 'bit on the side'. Isn't this thread supposed to be about accessible things like surveys, mystery shopping, cashback, discount vouchers and so on?

Seem perfectly valid ways for people to make a second income to me - a hard up employed graphic designer might not be aware that he could supplement his income by freelancing rather than having to take a second job working in a bar for example. Also, there is much more to freelancing than the "skilled" jobs - to build up my rep on Freelancer I started by doing web research for people.

If you don't have the skills then why not just ignore the suggestions that you are not capable of doing and concentrate on the ones that you can, rather then denying those people who do have the skills the opportunity to up their income as well.

A couple more examples that have made me cash this year -

Self-publishing - both eBooks through Amazon's KDP and Paperbacks/CDs/Videos through their Createspace arm.
Focus Groups - only done a couple, but got paid £75 for a 3/4 phone interview and a tenner for a 5 minute call on fire safety in my business.

Dear Zodo, I see you are a newbie, so welcome to the MSE Forum!

The things that you suggest are all available on the forum if you dig a little deeper. :)

I think the idea of this new thread, is for people to share ideas, granted most of what you say is valid, but people from all sorts of backgrounds visit this site with all sorts of outcomes in mind and with lots of different skill sets etc.

Incidentely Proof Reading is not especially skilled anyone with an English A level or a degree in any subject could do it. :j
Personally, I am writing reviews on Dooyoo, really getting into the community spirit of that site and am currently working towards my 2nd £50.00 :T

How do you go about freelance writing and proof reading?
