    Stop meddling.

I bought Summer Fever tickets for Waterloo to Southampton.

It was £30 RETURN, but I only used the outward ticket, the return was valid for that day only.

Came back another day, bought another £30 Summer Fever RETURN, discarded the return ticket yet again.

If there were no Summer Fever fare, it was at least £50 one way!

If the "government" had their way, it will be £50 one way and £100 return.

Total rubbish from beginning to end.

An off-peak return, valid for one month, London-Southampton is £41.10 return.

If you come back the same day, it's £37.50, return.

And if you buy a megatrain ticket, you could do it for £1 each-way (£2 return).

And Summer Fever was only valid on weekends in August. Not exactly relevant to government policy.

Back in August, I was getting £51 and £72 for one way tickets online. If I had seen £37 one way, I would have bought it.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw £30 for a RETURN, after quite a lot of searching. Lucky I tried return, instead of just one way.

There was a change at Gatwick fare for about £15 via Thameslink, but too much luggage.
  • I fear this is one of those things that looks great on paper and makes a wonderful headline, but that in practice could be bad news - at least for anyone who buys returns - and that's most people.

I'll make a prediction. Yes, single fares will fall, but by significantly less than half (partly because you still have all the fixed costs of selling them). Return fares will rise to make up for the shortfall in revenue that will result. Overall people will pay more.

Single tickets costing marginally less than various period returns has nothing to do with the effect of 'government regulations' - they have been priced this way for half a century or more in various guises.

More interesting is the other trial of flexible season tickets, and 'shoulder peak' tickets. Mind you this is hardly making things simpler.
  • i've been to quite a few places around the world on my travels and i can honestly say that our rail network is the worst out there.

even america has better rail networks and thats a country that still hasnt really jumped on the enviromentally friendly transport methods yet.

considering that the train was invented in britain and we where the first country to develop a rail network. we are miles behind everyone else now.

and yet our governments past and present tax us heavily if we dont use public transport to get around.

but how can you when the public transport just isnt readily availiable!

its so bad that my regular train service to manchester which can only be describe as being a sardine can its that full and is actually facing cuts in its service?

how stupid is that? shouldnt they be putting on more service not cutting them.

There used to be something called MitFahrCentral in Germany, which I haven't used for twenty years, admittedly. People who will be going on trips (long and short) register with an agency, which takes a commission. The passenger pays the driver for a lift, essentially.

I know there are risks like the driver is a rapist, and the passenger is a psycho, but that's why both sides should register with the agent, showing ID.

These days, with smart phones, it should be relatively easy to match requirements.
  • We travel between Great Malvern and Ledbury. 2 stops and 10 to 15 minutes travel time. The child fare has been £2.05 single and £2.10 return. Would often buy the return ticket even if we expected to come back by car.

If the rail companies can't decide on, explain and stick to one definition of "peak time" I don't trust them to simplify anything else either.

Has this got anything to do with the price of train tickets?
