When do I have to pay UK import taxes when buying from Amazon in the US?

I want to buy something for about £8 and a few pennies in the US from Amazon.com, their shipping method brings it up to just under £14 — is it exempt from import taxes?
There's a few limits here, so I'm not sure: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&propertyType=document&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000014
It's a part for my kitchen.
For goods like those, from Amazon, what are the limits? Are they in GBP or USD?

Anything over £15 (for customs purposes this is calculated by item value and shipping cost) will be subject to charges. Royal Mail charge an £8 fee for handling the item and clearing customs, ParcelForce £14 I think, so that would be on top of import VAT which I believe is a 20% tax on any amount over £15.
With the exchange rates being changeable it's up to you to decide if it is worth the risk.0 -
Thanks for the info!

What greedy scumbags!0 -
If the product costs only £8 then you will be O.K. because they only take into account the shipping cost IF the product value is over £15, in which case they work out the tax percentage on the product plus shipping cost.
