claiming mileage allowance

Hi.
Firstly I apologise for the stupidity of my question. I have never claimed this before and have no understanding of the process.
From may last year until this March I worked as a community carer using my own car. The company Paid me 22p a mile.

I was told that I could claim for the rest of it through the tax office. I filled in the firm and worked out that I was owed £791.

I was told I would physically get the money back but today I got a letter saying my tax code had changed. Is this all that happens?
I'm very confused. ..

The change of tax code is so that you dont have such a large cheque as overpaid tax next year. You should still get the cheque, though are you sure its £791 and not 20% of that? Next year you do self assessment and then the tax code gets changed again.
  • To be honest I really don't know. ..
I worked it out on the form following the calculations and that's the figure I ended up with.
That's a relief. When I got the letter this morning I figured I wouldn't get any money.
Any idea how long it takes to receive cheques? I'm guessing the answer to that will include the words "long" and "string"!!!!

Well, at 22p your company is quite generous on their fuel allowance, I get 15p but to get back the money you quoted you would have had to be driving about 50,000 miles which is quite extreme. I think its 20% of the £791 you will get back - and as it is such a low amount it may be done by tax code.
