My son loves Skylanders on his Wii, but i am thinking of getting him a Wii U for Christmas (if i find a good enough deal).
Will he be able to play his normal Wii games on a Wii U?

Yes, Wii games are compatible with the Wii U but they won't play on the GamePad (as Wii U games would); so you can play them but will not have the extra interaction of the touchscreen pad. All Wii accessories and remotes are also compatible but GameCube games are no longer compatible as they were on the Wii. You should also be able to transfer over all saved files/games from the Wii to Wii U.

Thanks Miss_Mario. I presume that means that the normal Wii controllers (as well as the plus motion ones) are compatible with the Wii U?0

According to the Wii U official website, yes; the Wii remote, remote plus and nunchuk are compatible.
You may find that to play original Wii games you would need the original Wii remote, but I may be misinformed on that. Though if you already have a Wii that won't be an issue 0 -

Yes I read a article last night about this said wii u is only console in recent times that can do this as both the ps4 and new xbox use powerpc cpu and thus can easily port games to pc unlike wii which I suspect is one of reasons due to slow take up why EA arent doing games for wii u. Ps4 and new xbox wont be able to play older games0

I recommend that you hang on to any spare wiimotes as you'll need these for multiplayer games on the wii U becuase you only get one game pad.
try looking out on hotukdeals for offers that are around for the wii U, I expect it will go down in price soon.0
