Private Dental Fees? Is what I paid about right?

Hi just posting to see if these dentist charges are within the averages.....i went dentist and had the following done

Check up £27
2 x X-ray £18
Clean, Scale, polish £52

They say I have 2 cracked fillings that need to be sorted costs are

2 Fillings £110

I paid for the 1st lot yesterday. And will probably have to pay for the fillings also. I just want to know if these prices are normal? I like this dentist and have coming for years I used to be Nhs (exemption) but have to pay now. i think I have to move as I really can't afford private fees....such a shame.....:(

My private dentist charges around £40 for a check-up, £15 for an x-ray and £50-something for hygienist. Fillings it depends what type you have, but they're about £60. I know, it is very expensive! In future could you use something like Denplan, which would help you budget the cost?

Hi, I pay about £55 for a check up and clean, scale and polish.

I presume this dentist is private only. The reception looks like a hotel :D I think a x-ray is about £27 on top of this, so far I've been too much of a wimp to have one done :o

sounds very cheap for a private dentist to be honest with you

The examination fee is as bit cheaper than I charge, as is the cleaning.

    The rest are pretty similar.

What you're charged is only one part of the equation though. The other part is what you get!

It's true you might be able to get 'a check up' or 'a filling' cheaper. But you trust this dentist to do a good thorough job and good fillings that will last.

If you go somewhere else, will you have that trust?

What if something is missed in a less thorough examination? What if a filling done more quickly with an eye on the clock, and another on the budget breaks down more quickly taking more tooth with it?

Sometimes cheaper costs you more in the long run - and if your lucky it will only be in monetary terms! If your unlucky, then it might be teeth too.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I completely agree, Toothsmith. Its definitely worth paying that bit extra for a nice environment and a dentist that takes their time or more to the point can afford to.

Obviously I know nothing about a good filling or a bad filling but presumably if a dentist can give away 'goody bags', have Sky News on the TV on silent with sub-titles, local radio on, glossy magazines and visibly use furniture polish to clean the glossy reception. Well, if they bother to that degree then its doubtful they would skip on the treatment.

A friend of mine goes to what we know as the 'school dentist'  . I still remember the smell of dentists as soon as you walk through the door, and its been the best part of 30 years since I've been in the building :o She pays £17 ;)

*Please don't read that as 30 years since I've been to the dentist. Its just 30 years since I've been the that dentist.*

Thanks everyone for your replies......I have now registered elsewhere. Yes my former dentist does seem to be reasonable. However I just won't be able to afford going Thier in the future. I will get my filling done at the new one on Monday. They seem well run and I felt comfortable.

Like my partner said how would I know what another dentist is like unless I take a chance......? I liked my old dentist but now have to move. Thanks again though. If I win the lottery maybe I can hire the queens dentist.
