Raised vegetable planters

In an ideal world I'd be growing my own veggies in my extensive grounds or at an allotment. Sadly in the real world my only space is on my patio. Before I take the plunge and buy or make a raised vegetable planter, I'd love to hear from anyone who has one. I have romantic notions about growing my own veggies, but I wonder about the capacity and practicalites of these. I am completely ignorant about vegetable growing too, but vegetableplugs are available locally at very cheap prices.....all advice gratefully received!

I didn't want to spend a lot either so we have used an old paddling pool, with rigid sides. Cut slits in bottom and fill with muck. Ours is stood on chipped bark. That way if we are not successful, it's not too hard to get rid of and little money wasted...
Can't comment on tips for growing, ours are just seedlings at the moment, which we raised under a cucumber frame.Bossymoo

use the square foot gardening method and you can grow LOADS:D
I Do it, i have 3 beds and plant in stages so i get a lot of produce over a longer period of time
have a look here to start with
http://www.squarefootgardening.org/
i did buy the book but you can get all the info you need online
the book starts with the ethos
then shows diagrams of example planting
then extensively about each vegetable
and ALL of that is online0 -
I was going to recommend Square Foot Gardening but I see somebody beat me to it. This is the way forward.0
