Great 'Cheap taste-a-like tipples - eg, mix lemonade & vinegar to get Pimms' Hunt
In last week's Hunt, we were gobsmacked to read someone suggesting a cheap non-alcoholic Pimm's alternative can be made by mixing lemonade with balsamic vinegar - we tested it and was interesting... Branded alcohol's costly, so we want to tap MoneySavers' collective wisdom on cheap, supermarket-brand alternatives and recipes for making your own.

Aldi's Ballycastle, a very acceptable Bailey's substitute, £4.29 for 70cl. Lidl's version almost undrinkable, Tesco's likewise. Aldi's Taurus cider and the pear cider (perry) is very nice too. Aldi also do a very nice Pimm's equivalent, might be called Archers, lovely. Aldi's 2l lemonade and diet lemonade is as good as branded lemonade. I do not work for Aldi by the way. We have been trying to find cheaper versions of the drinks we liked over the last 6 months. These would still be on our shopping list even if money wasn't an issue.0

Aldi's Clarke's Bourbon is £12.19 for 700ml and tastes just like Jack Daniels to me when mixed with cola. To be honest all the supermarket own brand spirits I have tried (with the exception of economy brands) have been just as good. Economy vodka smells like nail varnish remover in my opinion .0

HM Bailey's
450ml whisky
1 400g can evaporated milk
1 400g can condensed milk
1 tsp instant coffee
½ tsp vanilla extract or paste
Just mix with a stick blender (because of the coffee), chill and drink.
Made this at Christmas, it was lovely.Opinion on everything, knowledge of nothing.0 -
I use tins of value peaches, liquid included and blitz down with a hand blender I then 1/4 fill glasses and top up/mix with cheap Chaumet
(sparkling brut perry) from Lidl normally £1ish but any perry would work. This is very nice and dangerously drinkable.0 -
home made chocolate vodka:
It's very simple to make, the only thing is to warm the chocolate sauce otherwise it stays in the bottom as a glutinous lump.
bottle of chocolate sauce for icecream
bottle of own-brand vodka
empty 2l drinks bottle
recently boiled kettle of water
large saucepan
funnel
method:
squeeze about half the syrup into the empty plastic bottle;
pour boiled water into saucepan;
stand, might need to hold down, plastic bottle in water til sauce is runny;
pour vodka via funnel into plastic bottle;
put cap on, remove from saucepan, shake vigourously;
taste!;
add more syrup if desired;
taste again!;
when happy with result, pour back into vodka bottle via funnel;
drink any excess immediately (well, why waste?);
serve in shot glass or over ice;
can add a bit of milk for a Black Russian effect - I froze milk in ice cube trays and added two or three cubes per glass, poured the choc vod over.
Was a bit hit with everyone at the party, especially the grannies!0 -
Jeeves is a really nice drink and is a cheaper version of Pimms. Last week in Tesco Southend it was on offer for £5 a bottle! Aldi's version is called Austins and doesn't taste as nice as this.0

Another +1 for Aldi's Clarke's Bourbon (I actually prefer it to Jack Daniel's but that's just me).
Their Gin is also excellent at £9 something for a 70cl bottle, as is their tonic water. Unfortunately it's just had a great review by Jilly Goolden so the last time I went in there was just a large gap where the gin used to be.
Ballycastle is very close to Bailey's, but they do two versions of it. The limited edition is the one to go for (darker bottle).0 -
My husband likes Pimms but it is costly. He has discovered a brand in Aldi named "Austins" which he says is as good as Pimms but about a quarter of the price.0

The Pimms equivalent is Austins. Archers is totally different.0

I read this in today's paper
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/apr/22/aldi-own-label-gin-taste
probably won't be available for a while!:rotfl:
Students (and they'd be experts!:D) shopping at my local Aldi seem to love Austens. I'm certainly going to try a bottle.0
