Gee that is a whole holiday! We have spent £49 on takeaways since 1st Jan and thats for 5 of us.

I look at it the other way round -how much can you actually save towards holidays!!

We used to spend £30 every friday night on a chinese and then maybe mcdonalds in the week, odd lunches out here and there etc.

In 2013 I am proud to say we have had only 1 takeaway- and that was when we were at a friends for the evening, the husband and i shared a fish and chips!!

You have to change your whole mindset I think. The thought of spending £20 at least on food that I could make myself for a quarter of the price really puts me off getting takeaways now. We do homemade pizzas about once a week and I get the kids to do their own- they enjoy that. I also now cook my own chinese and curries etc, they are also healthier too!

  • I discovered the Mortgage Free in 3 "curry in a hurry" recipe and I'm a takeaway convert! The korma version is absolutely delicious - even hubby and kids prefer it to what they called the 'real thing'!

When we get Chinese, it's usually curry and rice so we now buy the packets of curry sauce powder from Mr T's or A$da - Mr Changs? and make our own. Exactly the same. Aldi's prawn crackers are lovely too.

Plus this way you know exactly what you're eating and you can be confident it's freshly made and not leftovers from the previous night.

Morning, I have been detailing every penny my Dh and I spend since 7/1/13 and have been shocked at the amounts. I have really pulled in the reins as we would probably have MadDonalds once a week, & as my boys are so tall & hungary (but still skinny!!!) all the time they would have 2 meals each + 3 for the rest of us, extra fries, ice cream etc. probably costing £30. Over a month this would my council tax. I now cook everything from scratch & feel more saintly :D

Incidentally, my oldest son who is now a fitness addict delights in telling me just what the fast food is made of and the process of how its made.

Great thread OP, I am very mindful of the 'sin' (financial and lard-wise) of takeaways and only indulge very occasionally, but this discussion has proved great food for thought (sorry !). Lots of useful stuff posted about making takeaway quality food at home that I will now be using  Thanks all for the tips :T

Hoping that my waste of money on take outs encourages others to really look at their spends and wastage. I will be making a soup with some veg that is turning today. Thats lunch tomorrow. And tonight the husband and I are having steak (still cheaper than a take out!) and the kids are having frozen home made pizza and fish pie (not together, 1 is having pizza, the other fish pie lol). Tomorrow i need something quick and easy for the evening as the husband is away with work. Scrambled egg, beans and HM chips maybe?

Either way, im NOT having take out. Definitely not. Im going to give it 3 months and reassess the takeaways and see where we are at. It would be foolish to assume im not going to have 1 in 3 months but id love to see that figure at less than £100 :)

Maybe ill report back on here if i can find the thread :)
